"just hot water" is, perhaps ironically, best left to cartridge razors.

Bar soap's fine, shampoo works well, but I must admit I'm liking olive oil before hard brush soap -- it's quick and allows everything else to be sloppy first thing in the morning and not do damage.

Have decided that Feather blades are overrated. Close shave but they're not a great deal sharper than Astras, if at all, and for me seem determined to snag against the grain.

Not sure I'd agree people need to avoid against the grain with an open razor to start with, but holding the skin tight is important. It's the best way to do some areas with a safety razor too, even if it means putting a mirror down and doing it by touch. The aim's to skim rather than plow, after all.
