Then why do you have the extra people that you don't bother reading?

A couple people I know do this to give such people permission to read flocked posts.

There's that, for me, and also that there are a number of people who post about interesting things often enough that it's worth skimming regularly, or people I'd consider "acquaintances" -- I'll read if I have time, and I enjoy keeping up with them, but when time's short (and it often is), it's back to my primary viewing filters.

you can change your default view screen, so that you have everyone friended but your actual friends page is leaner.

All you need to do is go to your friends groups and add a Default View group. Then add everyone you want to read. No one else will show up on your friends page.
