My God, I've Become A Liberal I just bought season tickets to the local theater. I probably can't attend all the shows, and truthfully I can't comfortably afford the tickets, but the phrase I need to support the local arts was rolling through my head. Mind you, this is on top of our season tickets to the opera.
And this past Saturday, I was at a party where I was, yes, eating Brie. And discussing civil rights.
I'm not sure what the next step is. I don't want to know, because I've probably already taken it.

It's also not capitalised.
I wouldn't be too worried. I've eaten brie for years, and I'm still slightly to the right of Attila the Hun.
You mean "babies", right? You've "eaten babies for years"?
Yeah, but at least you're the kempt brie-eating kind rather than the wild granolavore sort.
I beg to differ. I'm not granola, but by no means am I kempt. My hair is ridiculous.
The next step is writing a web comic.
That's not liberal! It's just stupid.
Oh horrors--next thing you know, you'll be hosting wine-tastings and going to poetry slams!
if you own bow ties or corduroy jackets with patches on the elbows, throw them away now, before you become a tenured professor somewhere. :-)
best reply,
But he said he was talking about civil rights, not white flight and the plight of the urban poor.

The next step, of course, involves hating Ameria and surrendering to the terrorists. [/sarcasm]
I foresee a latte and a Volvo in your future.
AH! I had a latte tonight!
Now I'm scared to look in the garage.

Yep, you're officially a liberal. Or maybe just a New England style Mod, with a slight inclination to the right. That's the new liberal, you know?
Well, I am from New England. Mod just sounds cool.
As a theater major, I thank you.
Tix you can't use, you can always throw them up on Ebay or put up flyers at a local college.
What's the next step? Marching in some peace protest with a bunch of long haired people of ndeterminate sex and age. Oh, and beating a drum while you do it.
How much white wine do you drink?
Are you members of your local PBS station?
Do you own a Volvo?

Why, are liberals known for drinking massive quantities of white versus red?
Now you're going to start eating Thai. And liking it.

What? Who doesn't like Thai???
Would it be too cliche to say something about Starbucks here?
Realistically, you'll probably start giving all your money to local arts and media organizations instead of charities that help people.
Just look for the standard yuppie warning signs.
Keep an eye out for a sudden pony tail and an overwhelming desire to tell everyone you meet how infringing on even the smallest civil liberty is evil, except the second amendment, that one's okay to quash.
Wait, do I even know what a liberal is?
You already have. You saw Brokeback Mountain.
Now you have to carve open pregnant women in parking lots, firebomb churches and support sodomy on street corners in broad daylight.
You say you don't want to know and a throng of people pipe up to tell you. Wonderful life you lead! :)
About seven months ago Rome Girl and I were at an art exhibition at a local business run by our friends. As usual we went there to talk to our friends and drink the free wine.
Then, we found ourselves for the first time buying two of the paintings.
We woke up stunned the next morning and while I loved the paitings my first thought was "Fuck, I'm no longer the starving artist. I'm now the yuppie patron."
Theatre majors of the world thank you especially for supporting local regional theatres. Ah brie is nothing though, soon we will start you on the more interesting cheeses like Taleggio.
A-men.
If it doesn't smell like you shouldn't eat it, it's not cheese, just solid milk.
I live in a fairly small town and know just about everyone who is influential in either the arts or the economy, as well as all 20 or so (out of about 75,000) of the liberals. (hah.) When I go to the Perot Theatre (our town's pride and joy - yes, THAT Perot, he's our native son http://www.trahc.org/perot.htm) I see who is there, and I read the insert in the programe listing all the benefactors, and there are an awful lot of conservatives and Republicans there. whether they are showing up because it's the stylish place to be or if they actually want to see "Tap Dawgs" I don't know. Though an AWFUL LOT of the heavy lifting is done by people I either know to be liberal or suspect them of it. But congratuations to you both on supporting the arts and on being a liberal. :-) And Brie is delicious. I would eat Brie even if it had Republican elephants stamped all over the rind. heh.
But weren't you one already? All your political posts lean moderately to the left, unless my memory fails me.
His political posts, as far as I can tell, are sort of left small-l libertarian with a bit of centrism throw in.
the next step is a prius, birkenstocks and a bumper sticker saying "Jimmy Carter for President, 1980", with the 1980 crossed out and 2008 sharpied in.

i had me some brie on peppered water crackers last night.
yum.
The really funny thing?
Until recently, Civil Liberties was a Republican/Conservative thing.
Then Bush happened.
I have a friend who considers himself a borderline Republican/Libertarian, and is VERY pro-Civil Liberties. So much so he decided to go back to school to get a law degree with intent to practice Constitutional/Civil Liberties Law.
