The Force Is Strong In Our Family: Our Family Tattoos, Revealed!

So I’ve mentioned the way my wife and my two daughters all decided to get Star Wars tattoos on the week of the release to commemorate our love of the film. And I promised photos when it was all said and done!

(Tattoos done by Matt Madda.)

Gini and I decided to get New Jedi Order tattoos – the school that Luke founded in the old canon, which no longer technically exists, but we are Rebel through and through.  This is my second tattoo, but it’s my first real tattoo, in a sense – I cover up my tattoo of my goddaughter Rebecca with just a regular shirt, but this big blazing black logo is impossible to hide.

Gini, alas, has to be a professional lawyer-type person, and so she could not get hers in the same place. So she got hers on her right thigh. But we are bonded by a tattoo.

Erin had the most work done – an eight-hour sitting, wherein she had a blaster tattooed on her hip with a banner of “Never tell me the odds.”

Amy, well, it was her first tattoo, and she went small but significant – a stylized X-wing flying into view over her ear.

How did we feel about this? Wonderful. We kept high-fiving each other all day.

And then we saw The Film. And later today, after I’ve seen it for the second time, I’ll post my very spoillerriffic thoughts on it in a protected area. I went in not knowing what happened. I think you should, too.

But the film itself doesn’t matter.  What matters is that we love the old films so much we wanted them on our body, and we wanted them together. And now we’ve got a lovely reminder of what surrounds us:

Love.

And big fucking nerdery.

I'm not a professional tattoo critic or anything, but that is some nice work, right there.

I mean, it would be a super-cool family bonding thing even if it weren't, but it being pretty is a bonus.

On a personal note, since its unlikely I will see this in the theater, I would appreciate some brief, non-spoilered thoughts to help me judge whether I can set aside my issues with the prequels. Doesn't have to come from you, I'm just saying it would be helpful for me, and I have to imagine I'm not alone in this.

It is most definitely nothing like the prequels. I can't say that it's a perfect movie, but I love all the new characters and it definitely feels like Star Wars.

Thanks. That's pretty much what I was looking for.

I don't expect perfect; IV-VI weren't perfect. (What movie is? Casablanca has that stupid map overview opening, if nothing else.) I just don't want to be hurt again. Sounds like I won't be.

I had mixed feelings and a lot of nitpicking yesterday after seeing it. Today after seeing it, I absolutely love it. I was able to set aside the flaws and enjoy it.

I'd place it fourth, behind ESB, ANH and ROTJ (the remaining list is ROTS, AOTC, Holiday Special, TPM).

I definitely have to see it again because I found myself thinking "okay, where's Han? Where's Leia? Where's Luke?!!!" and was a bit distracted. I think when I see it the second time I will be able to immerse myself more in the story and take more of it in.

As it stands, about the only new character who didn't do it for me was Poe. Loved BB-8. Loved the female alien with the glasses. Really dug Rey's performance, and Finn was fun. And the "classic" characters were fantastic.

And yeah, this felt more like the Holy Trilogy than any of the prequels; the writing was definitely more in line with those movies. I hope they sign on some really good writers and directors for the next two.

I liked Poe, but that he never met Rey meant that we didn't get the dynamic I was expecting. I don't blame that on him, though.

And as I said, having just come back from a second viewing I've gone from hung up on the nitpicks to absolutely loving it.

I think I will be the same way after my second viewing. As it stands now, the more I think back on the movie, the more I like it.

It's definitely not the prequels. If I had to say where it ranked out of all of the movies, I'd place it in fourth place, behind ESB, ANH and ROTJ. There were issues with the story in general that kept it from moving up to third place, but the issues I had might not bother other people.

The characters were all great (BB-8 was REALLY well done...I know, he's a droid, but he was fantastic), and the humor? The humor was back to what we saw in the original movies: Driven by character reactions and interactions and not by poo and flatulence.

Oh, the tattoos are lovely! But the BEST part is the familial love in them. :)
