Star Trek: The Original Series
I've been watching the original Star Trek with my daughter, and you know what I like? Everybody knows their goddamn place. Men are there to be dicks to each other and punch people. (And everyone is a snarky asshole in the original Trek.) Women are there to swoon a lot, moon after any hunky guy who passes within a twenty-foot radius, and to get shit for the guys whenever they wave for it.

Everyone's an awesome stereotype. When Kirk went down to the planet of the indians, they were ready for him. Nobody had to go down and go, "ALL RIGHT! YOU! WEAR A FUNNY HEADDRESS! YOU! EAT SOME PEMMICAN!" No, everyone on Star Trek knew exactly what to goddamned do when the camera came a-callin'. They were all already wearing leather sandals and pounding drums, 'cause that's what indians did.

It saves a lot of time, really. You see a guy, and unless he's simpering and crying into a napkin, you know he's going to be a dick who beats the crap out of anyone who looks at him sideways, usually right after delivering a monologue. Slap a couple of lines of dialogue on that bad boy to tell us whether he's a captain or a businessman, and we're in business.

The worst part is, deep down I love it, too. I want to talk like Shatner all the time now.

(41 shouts of denial | tell me I'm full of it)
