I know that feeling. It took me quite a while to work out that it wasn't normal, and I ruined one relationship working that out. When we broke up he complained that I had pretty much never said anything nice about him ever and always assumed that anything other than absolute first place was a disappointment to him. (To be fair, the relationship needed to go, but I do feel a bit guilty about also apparently making him feel useless for a year.)
