2) Seriously, how cool is it that there’s a Jedi Training Camp for kids? Registration’s still open for slots in February, and if I had a kid nearby to Texas, I’d be sending him off. (And bonus points for not using the term Padawan.)
3) Spotify is really opening up musical horizons for me. I do love being able to listen to any song on the year’s-best lists to see whether I’m impressed or not. So I’ll ask you one question:
What was your favorite song in 2011?
You choose only one. Seriously. If you can’t choose one, I’ll boot you. I’m looking for new music, but don’t wanna be drowned in suggestions. And no, the song doesn’t have to be made in 2011, I’m just curious as to what your favorite song was that you found this year.
If I had to choose one, it’d probably be the Dartmouth Aires’ cover of “Club Can’t Handle Me Right Now” (skip to 2:56 to see it and skip the intro). Seriously. It’s insanely sweet, and as an acapella song it’s just pure beauty. That last note is just…. mmm.
(I have other songs that might be contenders, but I can play by my own rules.)
My favorite song in 2011 would probably have been Andy Grammer's Keep Your Head Up, mostly because I'm on a peppy pop music kick lately (my taste in music is incredibly varied, but I tend to go in genre spurts).
The entire album is actually a lot of fun, and is exactly the kind of music I need to listen to at work to keep my energy levels up.
This is fantastic, such a pitch perfect parody of so many rap and rock videos. So many of these things are shot for shots of women in swim suits acting sexy.
Heard it for the first time late in the year, and it is easily my most-listened to song of the year despite that. Couldn't really say why, I just get lost in this song every time I hear it.
Hardly a new song but I never really liked or appreciated "Father And Son" until I saw Cat Stevens play it in concert this year. Watching the Muslim families who had brought their children to the concert sing it together almost brought me to tears.
My favorite song that I encountered in 2011 is "Come On Get Higher" by Matt Nathanson. I only discovered him because he opened for Train and Maroon 5 when they came to town. This was his second-to-last number and it made me CRY.
And as a bonus, since he was "just" the opening act, he's the one who stuck around and signed albums and hugged people. Wheee!
I don't listen to the radio enough to make an intelligent decision about new music... and I almost never buy or download music. I enjoy Adele and love her Rolling in the Deep song, but that's so mainstream that I'd never make it as a hipster. Another bonafide new song is Eilen Jewell, Hooked from her Queen of the Minor Key album.
Some things I found for the first time this year: Lyle Lovett, North Dakota James McMurtry, Charlemagne's Home Town
Basically, most of the time I just listen to a lot of older stuff.
My unexpected addition to the "songs I really enjoy" list for 2011 (as there were a number of things that were sort of "duh, of course I like the new [established group]" stuff) would be Metric's Stadium Love. Arena Rock feel with Arena Combat lyrics? Sure, sounds like a plan.
1. I missed this as i was knee deep in academic angst. I will go check this out
2. If they open one of these up in the NJ/NY/PA area, I am *so* sending my nephew. The kid's been Darth Vader for 2 Halloween's running, it's time to get him away from the dark side
3. Easy, Bridge Burning by Foo Fighters for these lyrics alone:
Gathering the ashes Everything's thrown away Gathering the ashes Scatter as the blow away....
Idk if there's a jedi camp around there, but the Wayfinder Experience (a roleplaying/boffer fighting camp) has a really strong presence in that neck of the woods. They play capture the flag in West Philly every Saturday, and have various getaways and camps throughout the year.
Not sure yet, but it might be Florence and the Machine's "Shake It Out." Here's to epic and sweeping, plus the 80s flavor of that "Whoa oh oh oh" melody at the end of the song...
Then you'll be delighted to know that Mrs. DelosD (the1trueheather) is going to be running a Jedi Summer Martial Arts Camp for the Steppingstone School this summer! Lightsabers optional though, I'm told.
Yes, I understand that every life must end, aw-huh,.. As we sit alone, I know someday we must go, aw-huh,.. Oh I'm a lucky man, to count on both hands the ones I love,.. Some folks just have one, yeah, others, they've got none, huh-uh
Stay with me,.. Let's just breathe.
Practiced are my sins, never gonna let me win, aw-huh,.. Under everything, just another human being, aw-huh,.. Yeah, I don't wanna hurt, there's so much in this world to make me bleed.
Stay with me,.. You're all I see. Did I say that I need you? Did I say that I want you? Oh, if I didn't I'm a fool you see,.. No one knows this more than me. As I come clean.
I wonder everyday as I look upon your face, aw-huh,.. Everything you gave And nothing you would take, aw huh,.. Nothing you would take Everything you gave...
Did I say that I need you? Oh, did I say that I want you? Oh, if I didn't I'm a fool you see,.. No one knows this more than me. As I come clean, ah-ah...
Nothing you would take,.. Everything you gave. Love you till I die,.. Meet you on the other side.
