I’m Not Sure If I Want To Play It….

…but damn if this 360-degree playspace for FPSes doesn’t look impressive as all hell.

Now, while the whole “run around and shoot” thing looks awesome, I’m not sure how those teeny treadmills underneath are going to keep me in the frame when I start running in terror.  Plus, like the Kinect, we are slothful gamers who will collapse in a puddle.  It’s one thing to play Marines with your fingers, another to do it with your whole body.

Still, I wanna at least see.

Oh no, this is not going to end well. I've seen that X-Files episode.

Did I see that right - it zaps you when you get shot?

The 360 degree treadmill things were a plot point in Ready, Player One (please tell me you read this, or it's at least on your to-read list. It's AWESOME.)

They were used pretty heavily in Society of the Mind, too.

If I wanted to play Marines with my whole body, I'd join the Corps. Or, y'know, slaughter the enemies of the Emperor so as to attract the attention of the local Chapter with my capacity for singleminded violence and my arms that somehow fit inside a suit of power armor that has eight more inches between chest and biceps than a human body. One of those.

I didn't say it wouldn't take some patience.

Ha - I wondered how they would adapt a game to render a full 360, I thought maybe a plugin to render to four 'screens' each doing a quadrant, but no, they didn't change the game, they just assume that your peripheral vision is the same as the crazy tunnel vision a game has. Still pretty nice, but not as nice as being actually surrounded by the view.

What it really needs to be the ultimate simulator is to be a giant hamsterball mounted in one of those three-axis space spinny things, with enough view projections to cover the full 360 on all three axes. Grass passing beneath your feet! Panoramic sky overhead!

I don't know which of hamsterball or treadmill would be more disconcertingly unbalancing. I'd guess pretty similar.

I'd like to _try_ it. Whether it would be fun long-term is hard to tell.
