At least they've mostly got past the "everything is an identical shade of greyish brown" stage! (Quake and most of the "realistic" shooters.)

But yes, I don't like to play dark games. I suspect it's especially bad on a laptop screen. The worst is puzzle-adventure games where a puzzle is "notice this thing" - I've got stuck on one of those and looked up what I was supposed to do, and the first advice I found was "try turning your monitor brightness up". That is not good puzzle design!
