I'll check tonight and get the details straight. It's certainly true that in the book, the people criticizing Reardon Metal are doing it for entirely evil reasons. However, Dagny Taggart isn't a metallurgist, she runs a railroad (I can't find anything online which says what her college degree is in, but I doubt it's metallurgy), so if her opinion is significant, it's only because she's one of the 100% Guys.

i believe she was an engineer, actually (as in someone with a degree in engineering, not someone who runs a train or the more recent use for computer programmers). so while not a specialist in metallurgy, certainly more knowledgeable than Average Joe in the field.
