In Which Ferrett Discusses The Death Of Bin laden

(Link)
As far as celebrating death-you know this is a toughie for me, however like you said if there was ANYONE I would celebrate the death of, it's him. I feel sorry for his blind followers, promised lies and acting on those promised lies, pray for the families of those affected either by 9/11, the following wars, USS Cole-all of it.

You are not inhuman, in fact if anything your willingness to admit you have the urge to celebrate his death is very human. I am curious to see the aftermath, fearful too-however this can go so many ways. Everyone is bitching about the burial at sea and such, giving him proper Islamic burial etc-by doing it the right way it can be avoided to be exploited.

My only gripe I have with the situation was that Obama's speech-which I am sure was being rewritten while we waited-had too much of the use of "I" in it. I am sure he made it top priority, and I am sure he followed up on it-I GET that. I'm not even offended-however the Obama bashers of the world will be having a field day with it.

When I called my mom last night to tell her to turn on the news because it would make her happy-her first words were "Did Obama Resign"-I said "No mom, watch and after this I doubt he'll be resigning anytime soon and you may see him reelected in 2012" Even in following through on something, people who have a firm dislike of him won't budge. Geez!

I'm waiting to see who at least gives a hat tip to W for having started the process that finally led to the death of Bin Laden, even though it happened after he left office.

...Not holding my breath, though.

Perhaps I should have said initiating the the prioritization of our intelligence agencies, and keeping Bin Laden as a top priority even in the face of later distractions.

Basically, I just think that it would have been nice for Obama to formally recognize that the previous president deserves some credit in this as well, and I haven't been hearing any of that.

... Percocet - the antivocabulary drug! :(

I thought his use of the word "I" was restrained and appropriate. He started out with a great deal of "we" statements, meaning the military/intelligence/governmental "we." But I think it is IMPORTANT for him to make clear that he authorized this personally and he takes responsibility. He cannot stand up there and act like the military did this all by themselves without direction from the commander in chief. Republicans have crowed about how the USA needs a strong president with military leadership and yadda yadda and the buck stops here. He made the call. He authorized the operation. He directed the agencies to make this happen. He NEEDS to say so. He SHOULD say so. It's not taking credit. It's accepting responsibility and demonstrating leadership. And he did so in a sober, fact-based fashion. Without, need I say it, a giant Mission Accomplished banner behind him.

I don't know if you heard, but the speech took place on the eighth anniversary of "Mission Accomplished." Obama knows what that means.

Also the anniversary of the day Hitler's death was announced. Coincidental things are coincidental.

They had the entire mission in place and ready to go since Thursday night. They put it off until Sunday night to get maximum weekday news coverage, didn't want to have to compete with wedding bullshit on Friday and knew that cancelling the White House Correspondent's dinner would have set up some red warning flags.

Obama actually gave the order Friday morning, which puts some of his jokes Saturday night into a whole new context.

I know. It's kind of great. Even if he didn't have guaranteed success.

The interesting thing is he knew about this in early March which is when the royal wedding invitations were being sent out. People made a bit of a fuss about him not being invited - though I now wonder if he didn't ask to not be invited because he knew he'd be planning the last minute details of a major military strike at the time.

Re: In Which Ferrett Discusses The Death Of Bin laden

My understanding is that the order was given on Friday, the operation was on for Saturday, but weather forced the postponement until Sunday.

I seriously doubt this mission was timed for news coverage. If the operation had gone toes-up (Desert One Redux), then that would have been timed maximally as well. If political motivations were driving this truck, then the order would never have been given, because this was a "bet your Presidency" moment. It would always have been easier to say "hey, we weren't sure, it's a populated area in another country ... " and not go. But Obama didn't do that. That takes big brass ones, and the fact that the operation came off doesn't mean we should think for a moment that the outcome was inevitable, or even overwhelmingly likely.

That seems rather a missed opportunity.

He should have done this with a banner that said "ACTUAL MISSION ACTUALLY ACCOMPLISHED".

If it turned into a Jimmy Carter Iran moment...it would have all been resting on HIS shoulders, of course. So yeah, "I" is important.

Yeah. I don't wanna call 2012 right now, but this is a boost. We're definitely going to be hearing a lot more of it, which means there's a better chance Obama will get a second term, which makes me happy.

The terrorists would have been mad either way. In a tiebreaker, I'll go with having a little justice.

At minimum, I don't feel like I should be hearing any more nonsense about Obama being made of less than high-grade steel. As far as I've been able to parse, what he signed off on was invading a sovereign nation known to possess nuclear weapons in order to go get the guy. Holy fuck, dude.

He told them, "Do not get in our way." I think in this circumstance, even China would know to back the fuck off.

He actually told them that before we were there? Because I thought, well, kinda the point is that whatever we tell Pakistan, bin Laden hears ten seconds later, tops.

Pakistan had been told a long while ago that basically, "we will go after OBL wherever he is, and if he's in your territory so be it."

He told them, "Do not get in our way."

He did? The news story I heard on the way in this morning mentioned that we didn't tell Pakistan we were doing it. Which makes sense when you consider he was hanging out in a building where Pakistan reportedly trained its military officers.
