All The Cool Kids Were Doing It: Ten Things In Ten Days

I only defriend people on LJ if they do something IRL that ruins my life, or that of someone I love, OR if they do a LOT of posts about things I don't care to read, to the point where my high tolerance for scrolling down is cracked because they are half my friends' page. I've only been unfriended by the woman with whom my husband cheated, someone whom I offended by disagreeing in his comments (he re-friended me), and people whom I don't know IRL who, for whatever reason, got tired of reading me (or not. I've never understood the idea of "cleaning up" a friends' list by letting go of people who hardly ever post. There's no time wasted from [not] reading them and it's not like LJ charges by the friend!)
But don't eat yourself up. People will read you if they read you and won't if you won't and there's not a whole lot you can do to change a mind made up.
As for Facebook, it has always struck me as quantity over quality. I accept friend requests from everyone with whom I have a friend or two in common, because Facebook is nothing but skimming, most of the time, for me. The only request I've ever refused is from someone who started with "Hey, pretty, I like your picture." Yeah, whatever. No indication whatsoever that I am seeking "romance." Friending a friends' sig-O strikes me as harmless, unless it's someone likely to do a lot of nasty gloating posts when they break-up, and then it would be slightly satisfying to UNfriend them.
In other words, it's not like you have to invite people to your home if you are their "friend" online. |
