Worldcon
Man, I wish I was going. It seems like all my Clarionmates will be there, and I have some invites to some very nice parties from past (and current!) publication, and there are some neat panels and other old pals showing up... But even if I could get off the time from work (which I cannot, given that I have Viable Paradise and my stepfather's funeral coming up), then the cost of my twin operations and other miscellanea would forbid it.
However, every day I stumble across another cool thing at Worldcon, and I realize that though a part of me wants to throw wildness into the winds and jack up the credit card, find a friend who'll let me crash on their floor, make the proper excuses, and go.... I cannot. I must be responsible.
Days like this, I feel like I'm staying inside dutifully with my violin, listening to the world's coolest baseball game going on outside. It's sunny, all the kids I like are playing, they're waving a comfortable glove at my window as they tell me they've got a great spot in the infield for me. And yet here I am, practicing scales.
On one level, I feel very grown-up for being so diligent. On another, I'm hoping this is gonna be the best damn violin concerto in the world.

I think the trick is, for Yo Yo Ma the cello playing is the baseball.

I also hope that that violin concerto is good, because your not going means I don't get to meet you.
Have you ever made it to any past WorldCons? I would be there - if we weren't visiting my mother-in-law. *scowl* I am buying my first place and omfg, you are singing my song. I feel like the entire world is having superfun awesome adventures and I'm stuck inside with my inhaler. Did I tell you my company is doing Supercom? |
