Welcome Back, My Friends....

"Thirty-four?" spluttered Matt Vienneau, former Magic Pro, writer of great stories about transsexuals, and dating fiend. "Man, I had you pegged at much older than that - how can you fit so many stories in such a short time?"

He's got a point. It has been noted by others that I'm middle-aged and married, and I'm still stumbling into lesbian orgies and having women send me naked pictures of themselves. I'm not a rock star by any means... But my life has always been a little beyond the pale, and that hasn't diminished as I've gotten older.

I have a theory about that.

See, I think that somewhere, in another dimension, there are people watching us. We're all in one continuous television show, with our lives scripted out - we just don't realize it.

It's not like it's one huge TV show - no, it's more like the Marvel universe. Everything in the Marvel universe takes place in the same arena... But Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and Daredevil all have their own comics and their own storyline. They have a comic that's devoted to just them.

Me, I have my own show. (Well, not my own show; I share it with Gini.)

There are a lot of crossovers in this universe; my show interlinks with Eric and Kat Meyer, for example, who have their own show. We have frequent crossovers; Kat shows up in my show to have a "diner scene" with me whenever I have a serious issue that I need to talk through, and I'm pretty sure I'm the comedy relief in the Meyer Show. But here's the trick:

Not everyone has their own show.

A lot of people are support characters for other people's shows. Yes, you have your own life, but maybe nobody's filming it. How could they? Nobody's written anything interesting for you to do! It's not that you lead a boring life (assuming you do, of course); it is, rather, that nobody's written you a plot.

There are several people who do have interesting lives, however - the kind that others find noteworthy, as in, "Hey, whatever happened to....?" - and that's because they're always on-camera. They have a show, and it's been renewed for another season.

I'm not going out of my way to lead a psychotic life; it's what I do normally. My scriptwriters are just giving me good material, that's all.

As I said, not everyone has their own show - but there are fan favorites who never have their own show per se, but they know all of the interesting people. These are frequent guest stars. They're the wacky next door neighbors. They're the Ropers, and in this other dimension there is a huge whoop and holler when they show up. These are fun people who you love to be around, but not much ever happens to them.

Gini and I have determined that we definitely have our own show together. The boxed sets look something like this:

Season One: The Loneliness Of The Long-Distance Romance
Ferrett (former star of the WTShow) is trapped in a loveless relationship. So is Gini. Slowly, the two of them determine that they're perfect for each other - but what to do? The trick: Gini's in Anchorage, three thousand miles away from Ferrett. Will these two ever get together?

Season Two: Welcome To Reality
After last season's climactic wedding, it looked like clear sailing for America's Favorite Couple... But alas, anyone who watched Ferrett's hit show from 1986-1996 knows that he's far too insecure for this to go smoothly. What happens when their internet love gets uploaded to real life?

Season Three: Last Stand In Cleveland
Gini and Ferrett have moved down to the States - mostly because it'll be easier to separate when they get divorced. But can some magic happen that will bring this star-crossed marriage together? You bet.

Season Four: Broken Promises
It should have been wonderful. Their marriage reconciled, Ferrett's finally getting to be a successful freelance writer and Gini's going to law school. But one fateful evening, Gini slips and shatters her shoulder in three places just as her second semester starts....

We're in Season Five right now. We're not sure what this entails - well, actually, I have a suspicion of where this season is going, but I'll keep that to myself. I hate spoilers.

The important thing to note is that my old show got cancelled. I had a fascinating story... Right up until Bari dumped me. Then my life just sort of lost momentum, and I settled down happily for about two or three years. You could tell that I didn't have a show because nothing changed.

Which is important to note: People's shows can get cancelled, and they can have comebacks. Quite frequently, people will team up for a new cast - I suspect Gini had a real drama show when she was growing up, but had about a decade or two after she married John where she was mostly off-camera. But then some bright network executive got the idea to team us up...

...but one day we might get cancelled and fall off-camera. Remember, the people who have their own show are interesting. There are a lot of people who have a lot of drama, but their lives never change; it's the same fucking problems day in and day out. If you can ask them what's bothering them and they're in pretty much the same relationship and the same crappy job, they're a supporting character. They don't have their own show.

I think I do. And I think I know who has their own shows, who's a supporting character, and who's a background guy.

But I'm not telling you, because some people get really upset when you tell them that they don't have their own show. These are generally the people I mentioned before - the ones who bitch a lot, but never change. They hate being told that really, their lives aren't nearly as interesting as they think they are.

Hey, maybe I don't have my own show.

But do you?

Current Mood: curious

(Tell me I'm full of it)

Heh, that was a delightfully egotistical post, thank you!

I think I have my own show, but it's on one of those television channels like "58" that nobody ever watches.

I think I used to have my own show (Kelly Travels the Country and Meets Lots of Bizarre People), but now I'm just a frequent guest star. I know lots of the interesting people, but my life really is kinda boring at the moment. Ah well, maybe I'll get my own show again after I finally graduate. *g*

Many people get a show after college. Many more have one in college, and it gets cancelled after the freshman year.

I used to be a frequent supporting character -- Neurotic Promiscuous Goth Chick who Drinks Too Much, maybe. But then my salary demands got too high and I got gradually written out, and now I live a quiet sedate life with no paparazzi, and I only occasionally show up in fanfic on Minor Supporting Character websites.

And truth be told, I kind of like it that way.

See, Gini was surprised at how many people didn't mind being supporting characters. That just goes to show you how egotistic you have to be to be a star. *g*

I never minded being a walk-on, myself. I just took my role seriously, is all.

In today's world of a show for every possible person, EVERYone has their own show.  Even the bitchy unchanging ones.  There's always the news, or Jerry Springer.

You have to remember that from the perspective of the TV Gods, there ARE no news or Jerry Springer. Everyone's written with a story arc.

There is no free will. And not nearly enough good writers.

This reminds me of a discussion [info]tashiro and I had a while ago. We're both gamer geeks, and when he's a player, he tends to play characters who have a set of goals and specific plans about how to achieve them. Thus he often ends up in the spotlight (though he's been taking care to make space for others), and he wondered why other people don't put as much effort into their characters' goals.

Me, I'm not a goal-oriented person. I told him playing achievers is all very well, but some people, like me, prefer to play supporting characters -- and there's nothing wrong with that. If everyone was trying to play go-getters, a group would constantly be pulled in opposing directions. Without sidekicks, buddies, and partners, the heroes wouldn't get much of anywhere. The virtues of the supporting cast are underrated, in my opinion.

No, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Except that sometimes, you're hell on the DM, who's not sure whether you're happy. Goals are easily seen as being fulfilled; good roleplaying is a much harder thing to track when you're doing excellent support work.

I have one support guy on my team in Ann Arbor, though, and he's INVALUABLE.

Definately supporting cast.

(Link)
I agree with a comment that's already been made, supporting cast is important too, and I've always been supporting cast.

I think I've been a recurring guest on several shows, but never a star in my own right, and I'm fine with that.

Well

(Link)
I can imagine the shots I'd take of me if I WERE filming myself, does that count?

Given my circle of friends, I'd say if anyone has their own show, it would be me (or possibly my boyfriend). Actually, if I think about it, my boyfriend definitely had his own show when he was younger and got transferred into mine. Or made a comeback, and now I'm Main Character #2.

Though lately my show's probably something that would show up on Showcase or Bravo late at night... more softcore porn than actual story. But then, that's what university's for.

I want an adventure now.

No show for me, thankyouverymuch. I'm chipper, I'm busy, and my worst complaint is nearly always too much to do. It's tons of fun to be in, but not much fun to watch. Unless you're the kind of person who actually takes care of her Sims.

If we were on a show, that would explain the rollercoaster nature of a lot of our lives (lurching from crisis to triumph to crisis)- If I applied that paradigm I think we were minor supporting characters through the 97-98 season (hey, every time friends decided to run a "real world" WoD campaign, we were always invoked as the NPCs with True Faith),but my pregnancy at the end of that season got us bumped up to major characters, perhaps the B-plot level-

98-99 season we were definitely in a drama series: startling preemie delivery at the beginning of November, surviving son goes home for the 1st time in time for the final episode in May, yadda, yadda-

It would explain why we haven't really settled in in Austin yet- whether this is the 1st season of "Eddys- the Seminary Years" or we're still the B plot team, just in a new location because the film crews wanted to play somewhere warmer, of *course* nothing's getting off the ground- on the newer networks nothing is premiering till the 1st week of October. *wry*

Can Mark convince the Bishop of the truth of his calling *and* get a decent gaming group going? Will Jeanette find a job that lets her utilize her library training and love of animals, while navigating the labyrinth of Texas social services , or will she be defeated by the Dreaded Red Tapeworm? Will little George learn to walk, or will he be incapacitated by grief as his beloved "sit piano" slowly dies of being overplayed? Tune in next Thursday on...

Oh, wait, not Thursday. I never could get the hang of Thursdays.

There are also delays between seasons. Gini and I got married at the end of Season One, but it was three months before I moved in with her. The end of Season Two was a downer, and there were probably two months before the move to Season Three.

You could be in between seasons. It happens.

Tenative Title - Good Ol Scumbag.

Synopsis - The life of everyone who lives nearby the local Kinda Slow But Otherwise Well Meaning guy, Scumbag. Scumbag manages to significantly impact his friend's lives for the better, while having no clue he did it.

Naturally, I'd be on camera most often, but odds are I wouldnt have too many lines, on account that I dont talk too often (because I worry I'll say summin wrong). Somewhere during each episode, Scumbag will either purposely or accidentally give advice or help the Person With The Problem Of the Episode, with often positive results.

Most quoted line - "I didnt help you, ya know, I just kinda guessed."

-C
And during the credits, we see Scumbag with headphones on, singing in his horribly bad singing voice "I'm The Scumbag... I'm the Scumbag... what a Scumbag... S. C. U. M. B. A. G. Everybody! S. C. U. M. B. A. G..."

I'm supporting cast in someone elses. Have to be. My life is to smooth. The only bumps are when I show up in someone elses life. I used to have my own show but it was cancelled about three years ago. Unless I'm some boring English type show about a married couple.

I am the star of the hit TV series "Fyrefairy: Adventure Whore" It overlaps with all sorts of other programs...including the family soap opera.

There are no running themes. In fact, anyone who watched it for long might get the idea that I'm bipolar or something. It's like Indiana Jones, but with more sex, exciting clothes, and no Nazis.

I definitely have my own show. Just a few minutes ago someone told me to update my LiveJournal because my life is such a soap opera. It has been compared to everything from Melrose Place to a Molly Ringwald movie. I figured it was just a side effect of being a 19-year-old college girl, but apparently not everyone's life is that interesting. My theory is that I watch very little TV, so I have to create drama to keep myself entertained.

I'm always the guy who hears the great stuff second hand, a little behind the curve. I kinda like it that way.
