Random Thoughts From Putting A Child To Bed
Dear Carolyn:

Until you learn how to read a clock, you will be at the mercy of every son-of-a-bitch who tells you it's time to go to bed.

Really, all of childhood is figuring out what gives you power and ultimately getting it. But I'm not going to tell you that tonight because a) I am the son-of-a-bitch, and b) you should probably enjoy your puppies and Blue's Clues for just a little while longer.

Sincerely,
Your loving uncle

(Tell me I'm full of it)

My children get to stay up longer when they quietly read/play in their rooms. If they are bickering in the living room they need to go to bed immediately. Bill Cosby was right, parents just want peace and quiet.

So true, so true. Same thing is true in our house.

Ditto!

I never told my kids that they needed to go to bed because they were tired. It was "You need to go to bed right now because *I* am tired." The less noticeable they were, the less I needed them to bew asleep.

YES!

It didn't take my brothers and I long to figure out that if we were quiet, we got to stay up later.

Clearly my own children are not smart enough to figure this out.

When I was growing up, my older brother used to push the hands on the clock forward 2 hours every time he babysat me and tell me it was time to go to bed so he wouldn't have to deal with me. I fell for it every time.

Think someone could *unteach* me how to read a clock? 'Cause I tend to listen to people when they tell me I should go to sleep, until I look at the clock.

Also, reason I'm not having kids #8,000,042: It would always be bed time, those kids would only see the sunshine for the time they are at school. Otherwise, it's in the bedroom/pit... with gruel pushed under the door three times a day.

After the little guy learned to read a clock, we had trouble in the spring with the lengthening days. This led to the conversation:

"But it's not bedtime yet! It's still light!"
"LF! Is bedtime a time on the clock, or light in the sky?"
*footscuffing, mumbling*
"Is bedtime a time on the clock, or light in the sky?"
"... a time on the clock."
"And what time is your bedtime?"
"Eight."
"And what time does the clock say?"
"Eight and one minute."
"Which means?"
*DRAMATIC sigh* *toothbrushing*

You're so right! My stepdaughter can read a clock now, and when told its time for bed, she will look at the clock and start a time-based argument.

Mine is 14, and will still insist "I have two minutes left!"

I mean, two minutes? Really? Go to bed! :P

I taught my kids a limited kind of clock reading. "When the big hand gets to the 12, it will be bedtime." They were so proud of being able to turn and tell me "Mommy, it's on the twelve now!!" that they went to bed without a whimper. It's not so much wanting to stay later, it's about being in charge.
