A Community I Have Inadvertently Joined
Facebook set the standard for the latest wave of networking websites, which are all about community and personalized recommendations. So I suppose I shouldn’t have been too surprised when porno took the same route.
The result is Videobox, the pinnacle of Onanistic technology. You can use the preview engine to analyze a scene before choosing to download it in one of four resolutions – and when you’re done, you can rate your favorite cumshots so that it will recommend other, similar, cumshots to you, then go scouting for even hotter scenes with a comprehensive search engine that allows you to find only the Gonzo Handjob MILF scenes starring Cherry Poppens.
I’m used to Netflix and Amazon tracking my movie habits, but knowing that there’s a gigantic computer dedicated to helping me masturbate more efficiently is a little creepy.
But the most bizarre bit about Videobox is the community. For in every scene, no matter how depraved or tame, you are allowed to leave a brief review. And others, in turn, can “Thumbs Up” or “Thumbs Down” that review, giving you an idea of how your fellow pud-whackers responded to this scene you’re looking at right now. If there’s a bad review, others will respond, giving you an entertaining flame war.
Naturally, I’m fascinated by this. I thought I knew porno, but no; these guys are a dedicated bunch, throwing themselves into pornography with all the zest of trainspotters or birdwatchers.
First off, they know their actresses obsessively. I have a few favorites I like, but on Videobox men are using their encyclopedic knowledge of smut to correct the archives. “This is mislabeled,” someone will say. “The actress here is actually Zena Fatara in an early role,” Then others will chime in with how it’s a shame that Zena doesn’t do anal, and that it’s nice to see her here before she got her boob job, and hey, isn’t the guy in this scene HIV-positive, it’s a shame that they haven’t kicked him out yet.
It’s like a little Star Magazine for porno.
Second, they’re firm critics, discussing “performances” and dissecting them with the seriousness that a professional critic uses to dissect a ballet performance. The number-one failure a girl can have in porno, according to Videobox, is to be a “cum-dodger” – at the end, you are obliged to take the sperm joyfully, not to flinch from it. At the same time, there’s much disdain of the sad men who must resort to busting a nut by hand when there’s a beautiful actress here to finish him off. That’s betraying, you know, the craft.
But the men of Videobox also rate enthusiasm and movement. Strangely, looks aren’t as important as you’d think – a girl might not have the greatest face or the best body, but she’ll be reviewed well as long as she has that joie de vivre, that ability to put on a heck of a show. A certain grinding quality is, in particular, heavily requested. Silence in a female performance is death to a Videobox review.
There are also a lot of other traits that can kill a scene. They want guys to shut up so they can focus on the women. They are irritated by poor camera angles, or bad lighting. They are here to whack it, and the interruptions pain them. The biggest complaint they can have is spending their precious time downloading some big scene, waiting with erotic anticipation, only to be disappointed by the myriad of issues that can kill the Big Scene.
Strangely, reviews that bitch about how ugly the women in a given scene are tend to get, in the parlance, “neg-banged” all the way to the bottom of the page. And reviews that ask, “Why the fuck would anyone be turned on by this?” also tend to get neg-banged; often, the hearty defenses of the joys of, say, GILF porn or BBW scenes rise to the top of the review pile.
This confused me for a long time. You’d think this a community of porno fanatics would be harsh on ugly women (and, to be fair, sometimes they are). But by and large, the good folks at Videobox realize that they’re all here to indulge their inner kink, and recognize that attraction is an intensely personal issue. If someone says, “Why the hell do women have to get these stupid tattoos?” you can pretty much bet they’ll be at the bottom, buried under a lot of counter-reviews that ask why the hell you’re watching it, then.
What will get a harsh reaction? Sadly, any hint of male bisexuality; even the gang-bangs get positive-rated reviews that complain about having too many cocks. There was a 200-post thread alternately defending and berating a video where men licked their own semen out of… well, various places they’d deposited it, but still. They are riotously homophobic at Videobox.
Also, they don’t like boob jobs. Again, this isn’t something I would have anticipated, but a frequent complaint is of the “landing strip” of flat skin in between two grapefruit-sized breasts. Odd.
The quickest way to get neg-banged? Humor. The men of Videobox are serious, and trying to get a rise out of them that’s not in their pants will get you smacked down.
I find myself endlessly fascinated by it, because it’s really quite strange. This is an alien world, where the men are objectifying women (and the men) to an absurd extent, but it’s also very much the same kind of debates and objectification involved in people discussing Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.
The reviewers are here to masturbate, and one senses they do it a lot, and they approach it with a focus on what gets them off. Anything that helps to do that is good, anything that detracts from that is bad, and they bring this attitude constantly in tiny, one-paragraph reviews that are like telegrams from an alien planet.
“I’m worried,” I said to Gini. “What if I get drawn in? Right now, I just skim because it’s so fucking weird, but what if I become one of those guys? What if, one day, I start keeping track of the names and realize that Marco1979 is full of shit, and start a running flame war with him across the pages of Videobox? They do it. I’ve seen them.”
“Then I’ll leave you,” she smiled.
“Thank God,” I sighed. “Thank God.”

I've been tempted to write a paper on the sociology of Internet porn forum and reviewing communities for years- I was both fascinated and appalled the first time I ran across a site that had comment threads below the picture, and the interaction- friendly reviews, hostile arguments, cybersex, discussions of personal lives, and so forth- that went on there. For something as (presumably) personal and private as masturbating to pornography, the amount of social networking that exists is kind of puzzling.
That would be a fascinating paper. And this was a fascinating post, Ferrett. *memories*
I'd read it. Assuming it wasn't too academic. I get bored easily.

I loathe academic styles of writing. Much better to cram the most information into the least number of words, as opposed to the other way around.
[Hi there. New reader. Found your essay on death and started reading your other stuff.]
I'm a female and a long-time porn watcher. I too, started to creep myself out when I started to follow specific starlets. For some reason it's more justifiable if you pretend not to care or know.
I even at one point looked up one's MySpace page.
Why? So I can FRIEND her? So I can leave her a message? Get a life, me. WTF?

Well, I think there's a natural tendency any time you have someone you lust after to get to know them on some level. Which is weird.

I read your journal religiously, but don't often comment. This, however, needs a mentions. This has got to be one of my favourite journal entries ever. The concept of it all is fantastic - I've always wondered whether pornography was like that, I know erotic fanfic is, so why should porn be any different? You give such a good insight into a world that I know next to nothing about, and it is hilarious.
My view? People will say that the internet is 90% porn as if it's a bad thing. I think that one of the great things about the internet is the way it brings together people with common interests, resulting in those 'interests' becoming far more open. Let's face it, we're all obsessives. This way everyone gets to obsess about whatever, uh, passions they feel strongly about.
I'm actually quite intrigued now. I was put off porn a while ago, and have always wondered whether there might be something there that I'm missing. Maybe I should go check it out, if only for the drama.
Oh, I dunno. It's just another subculture. People have been having these in-depth discussions about, say, BDSM, online for literally decades at this point. Just because it's about sex instead of Magic cards or baseball doesn't make it bad or worthless. Weird, yes; not my cup of tea, yes. But if it keeps them off the streets and out of trouble? Gold, baby. Gold.
Yeah, but I have problems with the obsessive Magic and baseball fans as well. I think they become a little unmoored.
but a frequent complaint is of the "landing strip" of flat skin in between two grapefruit-sized breasts. Odd.Very odd. I've never heard "landing strip" used to refer to that part of the female anatomy, and even the urban dictionary restricts it to the pelvic region (and the pubic grooming patterns thereupon).
but a frequent complaint is of the “landing strip” of flat skin in between two grapefruit-sized breasts. Odd.
Y'know what else is odd? I've always had a landing strip, and I've never had a boob job (and come to think of it, they are about grapefruit sized - but they don't stand up and say hello on their own, lol). I'va never had any complaints, either :)
I like your icon.
Anyway, there's a difference between complaining about body types when you're watching a movie where the naked body *is* the main selling point, and body types when you're with someone in a personal situation, who can see them up close.
If I'm going to pay for and objectify, I'm going to make sure I objectify according to my preferences, so I get my money's worth.
Ditto on the icon :)
Not all of those lacks of complaint were in a personal situation ;)

have you read David Foster Wallace's essay about attending the AVN awards?
Naturally, I’m fascinated by this. I thought I knew porno, but no; these guys are a dedicated bunch, throwing themselves into pornography with all the zest of trainspotters or birdwatchers.*snort* funny you should phrase it that way. you better be careful before you're accused. :P
I find it slightly sad and telling that the majority of porn watchers and reviewers on this site appear to be male. I'm a woman. I like porn. It's almost impossible to find porn that appeals to my tastes. Even porn you'd expect to be All About The Women still focuses on how it appeals to men. For example, a LOT of femdom focuses on the submission of the male, rather than the dominant behaivior of the female. (It should be noted that I'm talking about movies here -- In all honestly I'm a very auraly oriented person and need sound. So I don't even bother hunting for porn that doesn't move)
What do I mean by that?
Well. Go and look up some Femdom and then some Male Dominant Female Submissive BDSM porn. With the male dominant it is absurdly easy to find something nice and mild focuses on the male dominating the female and receiving physical pleasure through her -- Via either intercourse or getting a blowjob or whatever. The porn seems to focus on how the man in the situation shown is being
With femdom though? An absurd amount of that does not show the female being physically pleasured in the encounter. It's extremely difficult to find porn of a dude being "forced" to eat out a woman, or being tied down while she rides him like her own personal carousel. The porn focuses on the male being submissive and revolves around how the experience effects him.
I'd love to see some porn designed FOR women -- femdom or otherwise! Quite honestly, I think it's a much more common female fantasy for there to be a bisexual situation where it's not just two guys double teaming a woman but actually becoming sexually involved with the other man present(with anal, blowjobs, kissing...).
(Also -- in amateur porn -- has anyone noticed that while the girls gotta be pretty or at least palatable the men are basicly just A Penis and thus don't necessarily have to be attractive? There's some really fugly guys in straight porn.)
I dunno. The majority of BDSM porn that's with a male dom and female sub, the camera stays intently fixated on her. It's always seemed about how the experience affects her.. whether it be extended torture, flogging, or simply cock worshipping.
There are a lot of porn movies made for women by women directors, but they always leave me flat.
Totally agree with you on how hard it is to find porn that's appealing to women. And how subtle some of the male-focusedness can be.
Interesting in the OP to hear how some of this kind of stuff is explicitly demanded by the reviewers - e.g. no cocks in the scene !

I've heard so many women say this about porn too, you'd think someone would catch on to a few simple basics because we -would- buy it: better camera angles, less sneering and creepy attitudes, show both people, and make them both reasonably attractive. Oh. And less spitting. Jeeze, what's up with that?
Also, I don't think there's anything that turns me off a guy more than him constantly remarking on how much he hates seeing teh cock. One, unless he blindfolds himself everytime he pees, he's lying. He's apparently trying to impress with how Not Gay he, but in the end he just sounds insecure and like his own body disgusts me. Not attractive, dudes. Nope, not at all.
it's admittedly old-school, but try looking up some of Candida Royale's films. Three Daughters in particular comes to mind. She used to be a star in porn films and then she started her own production company to make porn geared towards women and what they want to see. I don't think she did any BDSM related stuff though that I know of (although I'd be happy to be proven wrong)

i've got some of those - and for the most part they seem to leave me flat. :(
honestly, i think some of the typical visual problems for porn for women could be alleviated by simply having some real story involved. it doesn't have to be complex - but i for one want to know why these people are fucking each other.

Maybe 70s "porno chic" era stuff would be more to your tastes, for purportedly having a plot and being aimed at the elusive couples market.

maybe. i dunno. most of where i get my (and my boyfriend's) porn is from adam & eve - got any title suggestions that they have? i'd be happy to give some references to stuff we've got that i've really liked, but it'd probably be better to do that in private messages. :)

@cox.net
I think erotica-in-general aimed at women tends to swing to the literary, because there is a fascinating amount of text-based smut by and for women, even though the visual seems to be neglected.
Wow. I've...gotta check this out.
I love subcultures with a passion. I have a lot of weird turn-ons. I mean, I've got a lot of the "regular" weird turn-ons like whips, and chains, and face slapping. But I've got specific ones that I actually need to track down. F'rinstince, I LOVE men with big Roman Noses. If your nose looks like a beak, if you get mistaken for Sherlock Holmes on a regualar basis, I think you're hot as hell. Also, gay porn of men in suits...in the rain? I can't even stand how hot that is. So, communities are my friends. I love the fact that there are some other bizzare peeps out there who also thing big noses are sexy. Who will rec things. Who will give me their 2 cents. It's still a bit of a treasure hunt, but at least I've got a map this time.
This isn't weird to me, just interesting. It seems like a normal progression for the internet... I suspect men like this have always rated every part of a sex scene..only now, they have a place to discuss it.
Ah, hobbies.
This is really no different from almost every other internet site dedicated to anything a lot of people do. I've seen running flame wars about whether or not WOD Vampires can have sex. Vampires. Sex. Imaginary beings.. flame wars on gaming sites are just as weird. Or Sports sites. Or sites dedicated to comics, or a particular comic.
Just people being people.

LOL. Gini is awesome!
I find myself wondering if there's a gay version of this. I, personally, operate on the philosophy of "the more cocks the better." [eg]
I have yet to find it. Most porn sites are strangely down-home, which I think is part of their charm.
Have you come across that 'Rope' guy (that's not his full name but I forget)? He'll comment on a new scene that's already been posted before (but on a different DVD) tell you where it was originally from and how much they cut off it. It's nice to get the longer scene but, well, it's just weird.
I hate those guys who comment on every double penetration scene saying it's 'gay'. Guys, they're having sex with a woman, how can that possibly be gay unless they start sucking each other's cock?
Videobox is amazing though, and has a pretty amazing price.

If the 2 guys were doing her and then went on to cocksucking, that makes them bi, not gay.

Ok, yes, but the point is that their cocks might touch for barely a few seconds. That's not gay or bi, it's either accidental or part of the scene.

And it makes them hot!
N.
Allow me to introduce myself. I've been a frequenter of your blog for a few years, and haven't said much because it's a friend of a friend thing. Hi, I'm eclecticgypsy, and for three years I worked as a phone sex operator. It is my measured opinion that men come in two categories as far as their approaches to whacking off go. They are either: Shy and utterly terrified of rejection (these ones? Don't comment on review sites), or they are: utter and complete professionals at getting off. They know what they want, they want it from their whacking off experience, and they are adamant about getting it. Ironically perhaps, I found much more sweet and sensitive conversation than I'd ever expected. I had men call up and spend a half hour on preamble (paying me for it) asking how my day was, what I did normally for a living, and details about my life. They weren't prying or trying to lock down my location. Sometimes they earnestly needed that hint of romance in order to get going (which I thought was rather sweet) and sometimes it was literally a part of their kink. They had to know "me". Of course, me was not me, but I won't go into my persona, cause I never know if someone here has called me. ;) It's also been my experience that men are a lot less picky about looks than the media would have us believe. I honestly think the pressure to be beautiful is likely something by women, for women, at it's core. It's a matter of competition, not striving to meet expectations. I had, at one point, a negative comment on my model's appearance (pictures were not of me) and within two days the commenter had been utterly flamed into oblivion by suddenly loyal masturbators intent on being my model's knight in shining armor. The negative comment actually increased my business. One thing I will say that's different between phone sex and a review site for porn? No man was ever willing to flat out give me shit voice to voice. He'd hang up on me, and I'd cheerily go back to whatever I was doing, but no man, in my experience, had the sack to say to my "face" that he didn't like how I was handling the kink express. Anonymity breeds scathing troll-like behavior. I don't think it matters what industry or genre it's in.
It's also been my experience that men are a lot less picky about looks than the media would have us believe. I honestly think the pressure to be beautiful is likely something by women, for women, at it's core.
This, I completely agree with. But that's a topic for, oh, a year from now. |
