A Quick Pimping
shadesong's blogathon is starting tomorrow, in which she does a post every half-hour for 24 hours to donate to the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center. Click here for more details. She has auctions running, and cool flashficlets, and... oh, I'm too tired to sum up properly. It's cool, and you'll get Stuff out of it if you do, and it's for a worthy cause. So go.
In other news, I:
1) Need to rearrange my life when I get back so that I can spend two hours writing daily, no matter what. Eep. 2) Need to finish critiquing six stories before breakfast. 3) Need to write a big ol' post on this week's guest speaker, a personal hero of mine, in which I will fanboy-bukkake you all with my squee, but that takes time I do not have. 4) Need to do more research on the Cuyahoga River. Yes, it caught fire. We in Cleveland are not thrilled to discuss that.

From my understanding the Cuyahoga caught fire several times in recorded history. I think one of John Stark Bellamy II's excellent books listed them.
Twice, at least.
What's funny is all the burning river puns you hear at a show at Nautica. (or Plain Dealer or Corporate-Name-Fest-O-Rama-Stage, or whatever.) I saw a 3 band show there, and two of them asked if it was safe to swim after the show.
...at least it's not fanboy-seppukkake.
Honestly? Most Clevelanders I know don't care about the burning river coming up or not. Yeah, it was so polluted that it caught fire-- forty years ago. And that spurred the environmental cleanup legislation of the early 1970s, so in a way, the country is indebted to Cleveland for the improvements made in environmental cleanliness. You're welcome, people. We're glad we could take one for the team.
Now, bring up the Browns' win-loss record, and you'll either get glaciated or start a fight. But the river? Meh. We even have a Burning River festival. Jokes about the Cuyahoga burning/being polluted are even more dated than and just as lazy as jokes about hookers stealing your kidneys in Times Square. Jokes about widespread foreclosures would be a lot closer to the mark these days.

If YOU'VE critiqued six stories this morning, why not top it off with breakfast at Milliways!
The Cuyahoga caught fire again? Or are you talking about the original fire that burned for, what, a month?
Was that the 70s or the 80s?

One of the best things about being in writing classes is having the opportunity to analyse and critique your peers. It gives you realworld experience in learning to analyse and critique your own. One of the major things that I miss about being in school. I'm contemplating an MA in screenwriting now because I miss it so much.

Your friendly neighborhood PBS/NPR affiliate, ideastream, recently co-produced an excellent documentary on the Cuyahoga: http://www.wviz.org/index.php/WVIZ/programming/the_return_of_the_cuyahoga/
When you get back from Clarion and we resume the regularly scheduled Tuesday evening spell-slinging I'll hook you up with a copy.
