Broadway Hero: The Complete Song Listing
On Saturday, I discussed a videogame I’d like to see: “Broadway Hero,” a mishmash of Dance Dance Revolution (lighted pads on an oversized dance mat), Karaoke Revolution (singing), and Wii-style hand gestures. At the expert levels, you would be doing your own quasi-professional song-and-dance number.
I got a lot of response for a Saturday.
Thing is, I couldn’t stop thinking about this theoretical game design. I actually went so far as to devise a list of songs that “Broadway Hero” would have, ranked roughly by tier and difficulty.
The first thing that everyone thought would be a total ZOMG challenge is “Modern Major General,” from Pirates of Penzance… But actually, MMG would be a snap. Two-thirds of the difficulty with this game would be the moving and waving around, and I’ve yet to see a performance of Modern Major General where the guy was doing more than hopping back and forth quickly.
Then there’s the “tricky” lyrics – not a problem when, as in Karaoke Revolution and Rock Band, the lyrics are shown on the screen. And if you’ve never sung in Rock Band, you may not know that it doesn’t track what you say, only the pitch of it. I myself witnessed my friend Josh singing along to a French rap song by yelling the words “FRENCH FRENCH FRENCH FRENCH FRENCH” repeatedly in time to the beat.
Hence, “Modern Major General” would actually be a lower-level song on “Broadway Hero.” It’s a repetitive rhythm that doesn’t require a whole lot of range or distinction.
There was the question of how you’d handle multiple singers; a lot of the iconic tunes of Broadway shows have more than one cast member belting it out. The answer is that at least in single-player mode, you sing all the parts.
This is not without precedent. On “Gimme Shelter” on Rock Band, you sing both Mick Jagger’s part and the part of the backup singer (something I’ve noted before as being slightly inconsistent). So if you’re singing “You Can’t Stop The Beat,” you take every line in every chorus and verse.
But at the same time, if you’ve never played any of the karaoke games, you’re striking for a relative pitch, not an absolute one, so you should be good… Except Broadway Revolution will test your limits of breath control. Still, that means we can’t have any songs depending on overlapping parts for effect.
The problem with “Broadway Hero” is, ultimately, game design and expense. When performers are dancing and moving around, they don’t have to worry about looking at a static screen mounted in front of them, but videogame players do – well, at least before they have it memorized. And the expense of a more sensitive, super-wide DDR pad and two pairs of Wii-style nunchucks and a pair of head-mounted microphones that work is making Rock Band look like a simple task.
Now let’s get to the good part: Choosing the song list.
First off, we need iconic Broadway tunes to play on “Broadway Hero.” Yes, I absolutely adore the smaller songs, but this is for a crowd that’s going to want the biggest, most memorable shows possible. They should all be A-listers.
Like Guitar Hero, we have the rule of one tune, one show. Guitar Hero and Rock Band don’t have multiple songs by the same artist (except maybe as downloadable content), and so too must Broadway Hero restrict itself to one tune from each show. Yes, it’s a heartbreaker. Don’t complain. It’s going to be hard enough getting the rights to all these songs!
And finally, we must have easy tunes to perform. Sure, every performance could be as psychotic as “Officer Krupke,” but then how would people learn? And more importantly, I know I get bored on Rock Band playing with friends, because for all of the downloadable content, only “Beetlebum” – one goddamned song – is on the lowest tier. And I’ve played “Say It Ain’t So” so many times on every instrument, I could fucking retch.
We need easy songs as well as hard.
First Tier (Easy Songs, Little Movement Or Dancing):
- “Seasons of Love,” Rent
- “The Internet Is For Porn,” Avenue Q
- “One Night In Bangkok,” Chess
- “Try To Remember,” The Fantasticks
- “My Favorite Things,” The Sound of Music
- “Oklahoma,” Oklahoma
- “Tomorrow,” Annie
UNLOCKED WHEN YOU BEAT THE LEVEL: “The Time Warp,” The Rocky Horror Picture Show
(NOTE: Unfortunately, these are all relatively slow songs. Can’t be helped.)
Second Tier (More Complex Songs With More Dancing)
- “Worst Pies In London,” Sweeney Todd (I was close to choosing “A Little Priest” on this one, but I thought we already had enough pseudo-funny lyrics in, and I wanted something operatic but doable.)
- “Hernando’s Hideaway,” from The Pajama Game (with special unlockable Robert Frost lyrics – as my wife notes, you can sing “Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening” to it beat for beat!)
- “I Don’t Know How To Love Him,” Jesus Christ Superstar
- “One,” A Chorus Line (ironically, I’ve already played “One” from Metallica on Guitar Hero).
- “Comedy Tonight,” A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum
- “Modern Major General,” The Pirates of Penzance
UNLOCKED WHEN YOU BEAT THE LEVEL: “Springtime for Hitler,” The Producers
Third Tier (Complex in Either Dancing, Rhythm, Or Lyrics)
- “Defying Gravity,” Wicked
- “Little Shop Of Horrors,” Little Shop of Horrors
- “If I Were A Rich Man,” Fiddler On The Roof
- “Shall We Dance,” The King and I (which I can’t stand, but hey)
- “Wig In A Box,” Hedwig and the Angry Inch
- “Anything Goes,” Anything Goes (Arguable, but I couldn’t have Broadway Hero without Cole Porter!)
(NOTE: This is my favorite level)
UNLOCKED WHEN YOU BEAT THE LEVEL: “76 Trombones,” The Music Man
Final Tier
- “The Phantom of the Opera,” The Phantom of the Opera
- “Cell Block Tango,” Chicago
- “Do You Hear The People Sing?” Les Miserables
- “You’re The One That I Want,” Grease
- “America,” West Side Story
FINAL BOSS LEVEL: “You Can’t Stop The Beat,” Hairspray
UNLOCKED WHEN YOU BEAT THE GAME: “Uncle Fucka,” South Park
NOTE: Yes, I know it’s not here. Yes, I know it’s an absence of one of the longest-running Broadway shows ever. And no, I’m not goddamned putting it in. This is my game and you cannot make me put “Memories” in my game.

Howabout using Skimbleshanks, the Railway Cat on one of the harder levels? That uses a 13/8 timesignature over 4/4 framing to introduce some really neat stuff.
Also, if you want to go a little bit harder in Sweeney Todd, Ladies and their Sensitivities might be a good pick...
I would have picked "RumTumTumTugger" as a lower level, fun song for Cats, actually.
(1) I could swear some of these are not stage shows.
(2) Which versions of the songs. I have four versions, for example, of Gypsy (one classic show completely missing from your list), and two more still to order. Which is the version to use for pacing: Merman, Daly, Midler (although not stage), Lansbury, LuPone, or Peters?
(3) You know, there are other songs from Cats than "Memories". Consider Mungojerrie And Rumpelteazer or Mr. Mistoffelees.
I suspect that they wouldn't be able to use any individual performance that already exists, but would have to get them all re-recorded for the game, especially since we'd be doing the singing ourselves. The pacing would then be set by the orchestra doing the recording, and would likely be based solely on the specifics of the sheet music, without any modifications based on the lead's style.
If you're going to have that huge list of extra song content like they have in the Guitar Hero games, no, scratch, if you're going to turn this into a webcomic, have someone point out that there's no "Cats" because Lloyd Webber (if I recall correctly) won't give the rights without having the Overture therefrom included in anything. He's funny like that.
Personally, I'd like to see the Buffy Musical Songs as downloadable content.
Oh! You know what I forgot? "I'd Rather Charleston" from Lady Be Good. Because... well. Gershwin. Mid-tier, because while the Charleston isn't hard, it's energetic. But contemporary peoples shouldn't have trouble with the syncopation.

Gini and I were all over the Buffy downloadable song content, but it's not strictly speaking a Broadway musical. (Neither is "Uncle Fucka," but that's why it's a fun bonus song.)
WOW. really want to play this game. :)
"Do You Hear the People Sing?" as a final tier song? I'm not seeing it somehow (relatively little choreography, easy-to-pick-up melody line, even if it is a tad bit rangy). Explain, please?
I woulda gone with 'Who am I?" Honestly, for the breath control.
But "Do You Hear the People Sing" is so easy to dance to! It's just a zombie shuffle stomp forward and back omnious crowd thing. And the song itself is not that hard to sing either...I was thinking first tier for that one!!!
"Do you Hear..." is a fine song, but since we're only permitted one song per show, I believe we should be attempting to maximize the number of show-stopping numbers. For that, you can't top "One Day More". Of course, I'd also love to see any of the Valjean/Javert confrontation songs.
"Seasons of Love" is actually one of my all-time least favourite songs from Rent. I doze off during it. Put "Glory" on there for the Rent song instead and I'll be all over it.
Heh. I like Defying Gravity, but there are several overlapping parts where you really need to have two people. I'm sure there are ways to get around this with various arrangements and such.
I just bought it last night. If you sing Elphaba's part, you're golden.
Trust me, I wanted "Popular," but alas. Too tricky.

"Memories" isn't the right song from Cats anyway for a game like this. The song requires some range, but that's about it, and relative pitch makes that easy. The blocking is too simple, the song too simple. You'd need one of the other more interesting songs if you were going to include Cats.
And if "A Little Priest" wasn't at least in the first bit of downloadable content, I'd have to boycott the game. *grin*

Also a "Forbidden Broadway" downloadable content pack would be a must.
I would lose my job and all my friends from an addiction to this game.
Couldn't pick a song. Love the musical, but not for the songs.
Needs some "Jekyll & Hyde". "Bring on the Men" for one of the easy levels. "Confrontation" for one of the higher levels...
Seconded! I love that show so hard.
"One Day More" would be a much tougher song from Les Miserables and would fit that level (especially in the same vein of You Can't Stop the Beat...where every character has a say in it, pretty much).
Good list for a first game, though there are certainly gaps in the playlist. There will, of course, be time to correct that, as we will definitely need to have Broadway Hero 2, Broadway Hero 3, Broadway Hero Encore: Rocks the British Musicals (Could also be called Rocks the 80s and still be essentially the same game), Broadway Hero: Aerosm... no, wait, not that one. Broadway Hero: Sondheim vs. Herman. There we go.
And then we get into the inevitable game from a company looking to cash in: Broadway Chorus, with multiple parts for the lead, dance soloist, harmony, and as many chorus members as you'd care to hook up.
There are gaps in every playlist. I stopped because, well, I'm not making this game for real, so there's only so much effort I can put into it!
I think it's a great idea.
"There's No Business Like Show Business"?
/And you can save "Anything You Can Do" for the multiplayer battle mode...
Ooo. A significant omission. Should have thought of that.
You are fucking brilliant.

If it were simply "Musical Hero" then you could include hits from movies that never got made into Broadway shows and from things like "Once More, With Feeling".
I wonder how you deal with songs from musicals made from actual songs (e.g. "Mamma Mia" & "We Will Rock You")
Also, you do realise that if this were ever made then "Memories" would, almost certainly, have to be the final unlock song of the sequel, whether you liked it or not?
sort of like "Freebird" in GH II? :)
great list.
Next can you do duets + dancing? Bob Fosse had some tremendous dancing duets.
Don't know Legally Blonde all that much. I'll have to check those videos out!
Why didn't I think of mentioning any songs from Spamalot when I first saw this?
"Hello Little Girl" from Into the Woods would also be fun - but the problem with Sondheim is that he's not exactly known for his complicated choreography.
I wouldn't have included them. I like "Spamalot," but they don't feel like Broadway songs, but rather Monty Python songs that made it onto Broadway. I can't think of an iconic song from "Spamalot" that wasn't part of the MP canon first.
(And yes, I ADORE "Find Your Grail," but it's not what people think of when they think of Spamalot. I think.)
Agreed, "Memories" is a beautiful song (when done RIGHT).. but it's a Ballad and would only really be even remotely useful as a test of pitch and breath control... AND - I've heard it slaughtered too many times to count. So thank you for NOT putting it in here...

Have you thought about Modle of a Modern Major General from Pirates of Penzance?
Hell just from a singing perspective its a tounge twister of a doozie... Dance wise... not so much...

Um, did you read the entry prior to the lists?
;-)
Karaoke Revolution has duet songs. You could have some of the overlapping parts for effect ones be downloadable duets.

Nevermind, I just totally missed it at the bottom of the one list... duh... |
