Okay, The First Draft: The Rock Band/Guitar Hero Purity Quiz

If any of y'all have questions you want to add, do it now. (Note, however, that the quiz will not be game-specific in any way, so asking questions like "Have you five-starred 'Through the Fire and Flames' on Expert?" and "Have you played Guitar Hero 1?" and "Have you mastered the drums?" will be verboten. Also, all questions must be Yes/No format, unless it's a really good question.)

Also to the also, I do need to organize them. Suggestions for segments will be appreciated.

Have you successfully played through all the songs on Easy on any Rock Band/Guitar Hero game?
...Medium?
...Hard?
...Expert?

Have you ever five-starred a song on any Rock Band/Guitar Hero Game?
...Medium?
...Hard?
...Expert?

Have you 5-starred all the songs on Easy on any Rock Band/Guitar Hero game?
...Medium?
...Hard?
...Expert?

Have you ever Perfect Comboed a song (i.e., played it through without missing a note) on Easy on any Rock Band/Guitar Hero game?
...Medium?
...Hard?
...Expert?

Did you know what “Perfect Combo” meant before I explained it?

Are you not able to play Medium and Easy song any more because you keep hitting notes that aren’t there?

Have you ever played any song with your back to the screen?

Have you ever found yourself “playing along” with someone else as they played, fingering the air as you mimicked what they SHOULD be playing?

Ever found yourself fingering as you were falling asleep?

Have you ever dreamed of little falling notes descending from the sky?

Have you ever imitated your on-screen character’s movements, punching the air exactly as your avatar does?

Have you ever replicated an artist’s signature move as you play their song (windmilling to Pete Townsend songs, et cetera)?

Have you ever played any song with anything other than your hands (this girl plays two guitars with her feet!)?
…successfully?
…at Hard or higher?

Have you learned how to play Guitar Hero/Rock Band using the default controller, not the little plastic guitar? (Yes, people do it.)

Have you downloaded a song for Rock Band/Guitar Hero?
…more than one?
…more than twenty?
…every last one that’s available (you addict!)?

Have you ever considered a song “your nemesis”?
…and did a dance of pure triumph when you finally aced it?

Do you have an opinion on what the best Guitar Hero/Rock Band controller is?
…and refuse to use any other?
…and are so hardcore that you bring YOUR GUITAR over to other people’s houses?

Ever purchased any official Guitar Hero/Rock Band guitar faceplates?

Ever decorated your own guitar with unofficial stickers?

Ever severely customized/created your own guitar (like this Lego guitar)?

Ever broken/worn out a controller? (A broken Rock Band foot pedal counts, folks.)

Ever hooked up some other instrument to serve as a Rock Band/Guitar Hero controller (like this guy who hooked up his drum pads to his Guitar Hero setup)?

Have you ever played Guitar Hero/Rock Band in public? (In front of your friends doesn’t count – strangers have had to wander by and see you shred!)

Have you ever specifically chosen a very difficult song to play in public, just to show off?
...and succeeded, winning the crowd’s heart?
...and bombed out, embarrassing yourself?
...and done it specifically at the demo kiosk at the local games shop, just to impress your fellow Wal-Mart shoppers?

Have you ever had a signature song that you reserve just for playing in public to show off?

Have you ever played Guitar Hero/Rock Band as part of a tournament?
…and won?

Ever played Guitar Hero/Rock Band online?
…and won the match?
…and won more than ten matches?

Have you ever recorded yourself playing Guitar Hero/Rock Band?
…and uploaded the video to YouTube?
…and had that video get over 50,000 views?

Have you ever gone looking for Rock Band/Guitar Hero videos on YouTube?

Have you ever had people over just to help you unlock achievements/songs/new instruments?

Ever purchased a song/CD just because you liked hearing it on Rock Band/Guitar Hero?

Ever refused to purchase a song/CD because the song was so hard on Rock Band/Guitar Hero that you will never support the artist out of spite?

Have you ever started strumming, unconsciously, when you heard a song that was on Rock Band/Guitar Hero in some other environment (at the supermarket, on the radio)?

Ever heard a song and begun wondering how the notes would go if that was on Guitar Hero?

Ever gotten into a conversation/forum thread about what songs would be totally AWESOME to play on Rock Band/Guitar Hero?

Have you ever bitched to friends about a Rock Band/Guitar Hero song that is WAY too hard for its difficulty level (“ ‘Woman’ is a second-tier song, MY ASS!”)?

Ever had a preference for the way a song shared between Rock Band and Guitar Hero was “noted” (as in, “Wow, I enjoy playing ‘Sabotage’ so much more on Rock Band.”)?

Ever felt guilty over bombing out on a song when you were playing cooperatively?
…and apologized to your teammates?

Ever played band leader, calling out Star Power at the appropriate moments?

Ever injured yourself playing Guitar Hero/Rock Band (we’ll count severe hand-cramping)?

Ever skipped out on work/school to play Rock Band/Guitar Hero?

…and felt no guilt whatsoever because you totally shredded that day?

Ever taken up playing a real instrument because you’d been inspired by Rock Band/Guitar Hero? (We’ll count it if you knew how and went back.)

Ever held a party specifically for purposes of playing Rock Band/Guitar Hero?

Ever gone to a non-Rock Band/Guitar Hero party where they had the game, and then spent the entire evening doing nothing but playing and watching other people play?

Does it count if you played it at work?

Ever refused to purchase a song/CD because the song was so hard on Rock Band/Guitar Hero that you will never support the artist out of spite?

Anyone who doesn't windmill on the guitar, swing the mic around or spin the drumsticks on Won't Get Fooled Again has no soul.

"Ever found yourself fingering as you were falling asleep?"

You sure this isn't the regular purity test?

Yeah, gonna earn a bunch of new points on this one next weekend. We just bought Rock Band as a joint birthday present for the two older kids. Problem is we aren't giving it to them until next Friday. This sucks.

I don't know if this could spawn a question, but it's sure a sign of addiction/obsession. A friend of mine played all three Guitar Heroes so much that it began affecting his sex life. He was fucking while listening to a playlist of songs from the game. And, well, as he reports (direct quote): "I closed my eyes I was approaching climax and all I can see is the little star power icons from guitar hero going across my eyes...and to make it worse, as I try and shrug it off as I hit orgasm my mind registers this as activating the star powerup, everything flashes bright blue and the crowd goes wild."

This has happened more than once, now. Quite regularly, actually.

Seeing as he is one of my "friends with benefits", this is.....interesting.

When I worked in retail, we were allowed to make CDs to bring in and play in our denim department. No one else ever bothered, so I ended up supplying the music- and still do, I gave them a CD last month, despite having quit six months ago. As that was at the height of my personal Guitar Hero craze, I put about a dozen songs scattered over seven or eight CDs. It created an instant bond between employees when they would listen and slowly realize why it sounded familiar.

On one slow day, we had four of us standing around the stereo, trying to remember the fingering to Heart Shaped Box. Our manager wasn't particularly pleased.

Never played 'em, and I don't like making quizzes where I'm relying on other people for data. Plus, they're not nearly as popular.

I've got one that you may or may not want to use, namely asking if they've ever used a Guitar Hero/Rock Band controller (guitar or drums) to play a different (i.e. non rhythm-based) video game.

Trying to play Halo with a Gibson Les Paul GH3 guitar is particularly hilarious. A buddy of mine even managed to get a kill on XBox live this way. And I think I've seen a YouTube video where a guy does it, so I'm decently sure I'm not the only one who's tried this and then felt extremely geeky afterwards.

Totally, TOTALLY unrelated, but you need to read THIS:

"Have you ever found yourself “playing along” with someone else as they played"

Shadowing. Term you likely want is shadowing.

Probably should also be a question about sight reading somewhere, (Even something like 'Do you know what it is?') since that tends to be a good way of seeing who just jams practice mode and people who honestly can just get in rhythm with songs quickly.

Oh, like I wasn't one before that. As though HotS somehow transformed me.

It's sad that you're so entranced by my creation that you think it changed everything I was, though.

Are you annoyed when musicians whine about how it's not playing a real instrument?
...And gotten in a flame war about it?
...And looked up how to make the controller a MIDI instrument just to piss them off?

No whining or flames needed - it's just stating facts! =)

I think it would make for an awfully limited MIDI instrument, really. I mean, you'd be able to get some expression out of it, but I'd think it would be a bit too clunky to be really useful. Could probably use it for laughs - bring it out onstage and trigger stuff with it.

Oh, sure, it's not, and any reasonable human being accepts this. Of course, this being the Internet, reasonable human beings are not the majority.

I don't think it would be anybody's primary instrument, but I know a guy who can play the Dr. Who theme on it and refers to it as a "MIDI ukelele." :-)

Going in completely the other direction, take a look and listen at what a "limited interface" (a single string, a cigar box & a stick) can do in the right hands: Scott Ainslie plays a Diddley Bow (YouTube).

Scott is a phenomenal player. When I saw him, a harmonica-playing friend wound up performing with him - completely improv'd, as they knew each other, but had never played together before. No rehearsal, just pure brilliance...

This may be outside the purview of the quiz, but it's awfully guitar-specific. Is that intentional? It's not like almost all the questions couldn't be made applicable to the drummers and singers too without losing humor or diagnosticity. (Though you wouldn't get to say "shred.")

I'm right-handed but have practiced playing Guitar Hero left-handed, hoping that one day I'll get the chance to work a Princess Bride reference into a game ("Ah, but I know something you don't know...")

Independently of the purity test, I fear that makes me a sad, sad, man :)

Three additional questions:

Designed a shirt for your Rock Band band?

Had it for sale on Zazzle?

Bought the shirts?
