Stupid Nader
Even after all this time, I can't believe fucking Ralph Nader has announced he's running for President again. Who does he think he is, exercising his Constitutional right to run for office?

I mean, it was absolutely terrible when, in 2000, Nader ran. I think we can all agree on that. Because Al Gore was kissing ass to the right-wing in an attempt to get votes, talking about how censoring records was a great idea and leaving Bill Clinton locked in a closet somewhere because he didn't need him, and then Ralph came along. What a jerk. Didn't he know that if a Democrat was fucking up their run for the Presidency, everyone should just sit back and take it?

How dare he offer an alternative? How dare he offer a Democrat competition? How dare he introduce new ideas into a campaign?

What a fuckwit.

And then it turned out that yeah, Al Gore had alienated so many of his left-wingers in his rampant attempt to sway the right wing that Nader made a difference! And I think that's awful. I think that when a Democrat runs, nobody should offer any alternatives any more. Because when a Democrat runs, they shouldn't have to worry about alienating their core constituency! It should be like it usually is: If you think Al's way too hawkish and right-wing for you, then you should just have to suck it up and vote Democratic anyway, because what you gonna do? Vote Republican?

Al should have just been able to sit back and snicker while the pillars of his party seethed impotently with rage. That's the way it's supposed to be.

But Al didn't realize things had changed. He didn't realize that Nader, that absolute bastard, had given people an alternative, and so Al - quite understandably! - kept writing off us die-hard liberals just like he was supposed to, and then Nader fucked it up. What a bastard.

And now he's running again. What a cocksucker. I mean, don't people know what's important in America is not that people have the right to vote for the person they choose, but to ensure that a Democrat gets into office by any means necessary in 2008? Fuck free speech! Fuck people's right to choose! The important thing is that we get our guy in office in the next election, and that's all that matters.

Fucking Nader. Someone should tell him what's really important in America. That bastard.

That's clever, but it sadly ignored reality.

In theory I love that in American you can vote for any insipid third rate candidate you want. Sure.

But really, it's a race between the two big parties period. We can hope and wish and talk about how great a country we have all you like, but the presidential race is republican or democrat. I could forsee a future in which other candidates are taken seriously if their parties have the right support and base, but the reality is that Nader accomplishes nothing but swinging the vote toward the right. Voting for Ralph Nader is a lot like voting for a mythological figure (like Jesus or Micky Mouse). You have the right to do it, but you might as well have stayed home for all the good it does you.

Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should, or that it will do any good. Just because Nader can run and has the right doesn't mean that he isn't also doing something futile that accomplishes nothing but swinging the vote. It can be both at once.

This could be described as a "live by the sword, die by the sword" phenomenon, since Gore would have never become Veep in the first place without Ross Perot in 1992.

I would have enjoyed this tongue in cheek tirade a lot more if it hadn't been peppered with every rude, crude phrase available. Imitating the low lifes who actually THINK this way is not going to change their tiny minds. And I believe there are still many people like me who would prefer your usual thoughtful and insightful comments without the vulgarity.

Interestingly enough, at least according to some of the exit polls I've seen, nader stole more votes from Bush than Gore back in 2000.

I'm really getting sick of the bitching about Nader and the bitching about the bitching about Nader. Especially the latter camp because they automatically jump to the conclusion that the people who don't like Nader are somehow fundamentally opposed to third parties, alternatives, etc. Is there some of that? Sure, but it's not the main reason by a LONG shot.

It's about this: a lot of people very firmly believe that if Nader hadn't run in 2000, Dubya would not have been elected. To say that there are some Democrats bitter and angry over this is the understatement of the year.

I'm a little skeptical of the above, although there are pretty good arguments for it. But it's undeniable that his campaign did not help and was spectacularly ill-timed; had he been a Democrat it would have been termed a "murder/suicide". Ross Perot is still loathed in some conservative circles for the same reasons.

It also managed to ruin any political capital or respect inside the Beltway he might have had, and in more quarters than you might think.

What it comes down to is that if you want to build a political party, you don't go in on the top floor, you start in the locals and work your way up. I won't accuse the man of ego, but I will accuse him of tunnel vision. He was so dedicated to getting the Green Party 5% and national funding that he didn't realize the larger consequences of his actions. Which, depressingly, makes him just another politician.

According to my Aussie friend, in Australia not only is voting compulsory, but you're allowed to rank your preferences. So someone could say "well, I'd like Nader for president, but if he doesn't win I'd rather have Gore than Bush."

I sort of wish we did both of those things here. It would render Nader a lot less annoying. And yeah, I know Perot swung an election and I didn't seem to mind it so much when he swung it the way I liked.
