A Very Bizarre Poll With No Sequel Planned
So [info]chadu had this to say:

"Yes, it's a FACT (tm) that after mentioning the number 2 as regards a sequel story or character, you must say 'Electric Boogaloo.'"

Now, I'm not opposed to the "Electric Boogaloo" approach. But I, on the other hand, prefer the "X Harder" approach of the "Die Hard" series. So if we were discussing a sequel to, say, "Lord of the Rings," for him it would be "Lord of the Rings 2: Electric Boogaloo," but for me? "Lord of the Rings 2: Ring Harder." Likewise, for "Gone With The Wind," Chad thinks it would be "Gone With The Wind 2: Electric Boogaloo," and I think it would be "Gone With The Wind 2: Wind Harder."

Obviously, there are some slam-dunks on his end: I don't think there's any reasonable person who'd disagree that "There Will Be Blood 2: Electric Boogaloo" is just funnier. But "Rear Window 2: Rear Harder" is also, I think, funnier. Every movie's going to have its own fit. But on the whole, I think "Electric Boogaloo" gets repetitive, but the "X harder" format allows for all sorts of strange and unthought of creativity.

But of course, I have a paid account, so let's abuse it: Poll #1149923 A Poll With No Sequel
Open to: All, results viewable to: All

Which sequel style is more consistently funnier:

View Answers

Sequel 2: Electric Boogaloo
102 (29.1%)

Sequel 2: [Sequel] Harder
114 (32.5%)

Some other, lamer, attempt, which I will attempt to defend without success in the comments
17 (4.8%)

They're both equally good
40 (11.4%)

Are you on fucking crack for a poll like this, Steinmetz?
78 (22.2%)

How about titling the first film in a series "Episode 4" thus ensuring that one day in your dotage you'll end up having to make three mediocre films that trash the cherished childhood memories of your most devoted fans?

I'm a "Harder" fan myself (If only Die Hard 3 had been "Die Hardest").
Though I also like the "Returns/continues/other verbs" style ("Armageddon Returns")

Sorry.

I reasonably argue that "There Will Be Blood 2: Bleed Harder" is funnier. But "there Will Be Blood 2: Drain harder" is even funnier.

I think it's really sad that as soon as I saw this poll, I thought, oh, shit, I'm not logged on, and actually took the time to LOG ON (I'm in school) just so I could tell you that I thought you were on crack.

Powerful emotions, there.

The 2/Boogaloo wins for the rhyme factor and because the non-sequitur factor of adding "Electric Boogaloo" is always going to win over the "Hrm..that would be appropriate" factor over using a word from the original title.

Compare "Die Hard 2: Electric Boogaloo" versus "Breakin' 2: Break Harder" and you see what I mean. The first is just *wrong*. The second, well, you could hear that and say..."Hrm...yeah, that is right."

I would think a mixture of the two is best, pick either Electric for the beginning or Boogaloo for the end, then insert the ________ harder in the free space.

Space Balls 2: Electric Ball Harder

No Country for Old Men 2: Old Men Harder Boogaloo

Word.

For some things I am also fan of the Sequel 2: The [Sequel]-ing (or possibly Sequel 2: The En-[Sequel]-ing) format.

E.g. "There Will Be Blood 2: The Bloodying" or "Rear Window 2: The Enwindowing".

I like them both, but think that "X Harder" takes an increment more effort, and is slightly less expected. So, for me it wins.

That said, I always use "This Time, It's Personal."

Here's the thing: I've actually seen Breakin' 2. And I think you shouldn't be allowed to use the "Electric Boogaloo" line unless you're able to at least identify one of the other silly things about that movie. Otherwise, you're just repeating other people's jokes without understanding them, which is never funny.

Anyway, if you reflexively make the same joke every time, it's certainly not funny. You have to mix it up a little. At least "X harder" has the changing X. Consider working in "2: the streets" or even "2-D". Put some effort into it! Don't just make the same decades-old references as everyone else.

You know what gets me? It's that I'll bet that out of all of the people who will chirp up with "Electric Boogaloo", maybe one out of a thousand actually knows about the movie that started the whole meme. In a way, that's immortality, especially when you consider that nobody refers to all of the other shitty teen movies out at the beginning of 1985. When was the last time you heard someone try to drop a witty or at least insufficiently pedantic movie reference to Tuff Turf?

I think that the Die Hard/er theory is good, but applied in the sense of "take the title and make it moreso."

Examples: Letters from Iwo Jima becomes E-mails from Iwo Jima. Our Town becomes Our City.

Okay, not really, but the theory struck me as funny even though my execution failed.

I'm one of those Die Hard/Die Harder/Die Hardest people.

I guess it is because I'm older than everyone else (at least here) but I'm used to sequels being prepended with Son of. Mad Magazine did the then ultimate sequel with Return of the Son of the Hero of the Eagle Squadron. But nowadays no one wants to give the genealogy of the movie in the title I guess.

"Boogaloo" is such a damn funny word. As far as I'm concerned, even the repetitiveness is not enough to match the silliness of a gem of a word like that. Plus, it rhymes. WIN.
