I don't mind being called a snob. I worked hard - literally - for my wine knowledge, and I don't mind correcting the erroneous assumptions that people make about wine based on watching people who fancy themselves to be "cultured" put on an unnecessary show.

Understood. I was just teasing, really, in the spirit of the discussion.

But although I agree with you that there's far too much stupidity (whether or not the people responsible are stupid) in wine-cultured culture, a distinction between "tasting" and "smelling" is kind of unfair. "Taste" is commonly used as an analogue for "flavour", which is mostly scent-based. So unless you're talking about sensory psychology in an extremely technical sense (ha!), it seems a bit silly to deride people for saying they "taste" oak. There are much more valid things with which to deride wine snobs.

And therein lies the difference between someone who actually enjoys a beverage and knows the differences and someone who tries to bullshit someone into thinking they know more than they do. We've thrown 'ringers' into our tastings just to see who can and cannot pick them out. We once even put moonshine with just a dash of a decent blended whiskey and watched as some of the people there extolled on the virtues of what they just drink; one person, however, did say 'I give that a 9! It tastes just like what my grandfather used to drink!" Heh.

I don't by any means consider myself a Scotch expert but I have tasted enough bottles to know how to differenciate the regions, age, casking, etc. - I enjoy the taste and sensation of the drink. This doesn't mean that I walk up to people and pretend to know what I'm doing because in my crowd, you do get called on your voiced opinions and unless one person is a super-taster, there are 20-30 people who will call bullshit if they don't agree with you.
