I'm one of those California oak bombs lovers and I can definitely smell the difference!
I had one from a local winery - I think it was Lone Oak - where the oak was so strong, it just about blew my socks off. My husband loves this sort of wine, but it pretty much overwhelms my nose, then I can't taste anything else for a while. *grumble*
I like big reds. The winery I volunteer in makes one that smells of diesel and new leather when you first decant it. It's very startling, but it's so lovely with a big chunk of grilled cow.

Are you serious? I thought only Rieslings had the petrol nose.
Cabernet Francs, too. And Chambourcins, to a lesser extent.
It's kind of cool, actually. We picked Cab Franc in October, and those grapes are so sweet smelling on the vine and in the bin, and they taste like candy. But after fermenting, you'd swear you were in a motorcycle garage. When we were bottling Cab Franc last year, a guest in the tasting room yelled "Jesus Christ! You guys working on a truck down there?"
We all laughed so hard, and the vintner invited the guy down for a barrel tasting. It's fun to watch someone's face light up when they get to be that close to the process.
I think it was worth drilling through this entire thread just for posts like this!
