The Watchtower of Destruction: The Ferrett's Journal - A Cross-Post Of Great Import

A Cross-Post Of Great Import Taken straight from yuki_onna's Livejournal, as we agreed. ( yuki_onna, a.k.a. Catherynne M. Valente, is the Tiptree award-winning and World Fantasy Award-nominated author of The Orphan's Tales.)
"On the way home from ConFusion, a conversation started in the car. A very stupid conversation about a very stupid idea.
"Yet somehow, stupid piled on stupid until it became awesome, and then brilliant, and then Something We Have to Do. With the upshot that...
" theferrett and I have decided to do a webcomic together.
"Now, you all know you want to see theferrett at the helm of another webcomic since Home on the Strange closed. And I swear to you, you want to see me do this. It's going to totally blow my classy, poetic cover. You want to see that.
"And that, of course, brings us to the crux of all webcomics.
"We need an artist. Stat. And artists are precious in the webcomics community, there are so many more writers than artists. But we have faith that the right one for us is out there.
"We're looking for a dark, gritty style, for someone willing to at least do spot color if not a color comic, for someone eager, fun, professional, and fast. Some (small) payment is on the table here. It really helps if you have an utterly dorky sense of humor. Given the two authors, this is very likely to be an amazing source of exposure. It will also be a lot of work.
"And we're looking to launch in three weeks.
"I assure you that, despite its humble beginnings, this is an idea that needs to be born and pretty much needs to be born in the cultural now. If you are an artist and you are willing, please comment. If you know an artist, please show them this post. Cast the net, kids. We have strips planned and are ready to go. We know the story, beginning, middle, and end. We just need the pictures. We just need you.
"Help us, Livejournal, you're our only hope."
I'd also add that yes, I know I'm derelict in my duties. I need to finalize the final script for HotS for submission to Roni's approval, which I swear I will do this week. You can thank Yanni Kuznia for that, as she accosted me at the con this weekend to ask, "What happened to Branch?" and I realized that yeah, um, people are waiting. I know, thanks to Roni's excellent idea of her final disposition, but that knowledge does not get magically transmitted.

Can't draw. Just here to squee. SQUEEEEEEEE!
I'm more excited about HotS than I am about the new comic.
But I'm sure I'll be excited about that given a bit of time :->
Well, the thing is we'll be alienating both audience. It won't be anything like HotS, and it sure as hell won't be the Orphan's Tales. In fact, I don't know who it will appeal to except for us.
Then again, I suppose that's the attitude one should have for a webcomic.
You won't be alienating _this_ audience.
I like your writing on your journal. And I loved lots of HOTS. And I'm pretty damned eclectic. So long as you continue to write well (and you're a perfectionist, so I'm expecting you to kill yourself over it) you'll be keeping me :->

Looking forward to Branch's epilogue and the new comic.

I posted it in my journal. I know a significant number of comics artists, but most are too busy with commissions, comics, their own webcomics, and illustration clients to do something like this. I thought of jenniferrodgers when I saw your post and so tappedd her in my post, but I don't know what her schedule is like, or her interest level is. Good luck! I'm looking foward to both comics! N.

I might be up for this. If you give me some character descriptions I could draw up some sketches and see if it's at all what you're looking for? I has a gallery here or here if you would like to sample the goods. They're mostly furry, but I assure you I am reasonably competent at drawing humans.
Thanks! We're still lookin' right now, and we're not sure about the tone and so forth, so we're really juggling several things - tone, quality, consistency. Nice stuff, though, and you're definitely in the running, but we'll letcha know.

Oh jeez. Nobody better than bigbigtruck. I'd drop her an email as I don't know that these circles intersect. She's not feeling well today, so putting an impending deadline might not be the best thing today - but tell her. Tell her I sent you.
Got an email address for her?
Whoops, never mind, found it.

Yes! I was looking forward to another brainchild of yours, and the fact that yuki_onna is in on it too just makes it that much cooler! Hope to see it soon! (And the Branch storyline too; looking forward to that ending.)
I can do it. I already do colour for a webcomic.
Ok, better. I can do this and I can prove it. Give me a three panel or less setup, basic character descriptions and teh dialogue and I'll do you a strip.
Eeeeeeeeeeeeee! You and Valente doing a webcomic?!?! Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Wish I could help with the artist bit. Sorry.
How many "issues" do you plan on this being? I mean, you have the everything planned, but how long is it going to be?
Not asking for myself, since I have all the drawing ability of a self-conscious 4-year old, but it's a question that will likely make a difference for artists out there.
I never wanna say. I honestly thought HotS would be wrapped up come now. We never even got to the stories I wanted to tell.
I think about eighteen months, but I could be wrong. Maybe a lot less.
Also, the "number of times a week" is definitely an issue.
Damn! I didn't know you were at the con! I was only there Sat. Night this year, but I would have looked for you had I known.
Oh, I wish I'd known, too! In my mind, you're out in California. I do not know why.
*garners up courage* Well, I've taken a few abortive stabs at comic design myself, though I cannot seem to write an overarching plot myself (and I'm no good at teh funny). Still, I'm a pretty decent artist, with a job that gives me a lot of time on my hands, and I'd love to take a crack at it and break into comic-ing. (Hey, everyone's gotta start somewhere, right?)
You can find my stuff at www.rhpotter.com , if you wanna look and see whether or not my art style is your thing. *crosses fingers*
Well, this assumes that this is Teh Funny. Which it really sorta isn't. Kinda. Maybe.
Nice stuff. (The Japanese inking stuff is particularly sweet.) We may contact you further.
Thanks--glad you like! Please do keep me in mind, but either way, good luck! :-)

Impressive stuff. Someone's walking around with some very swish tattoos. :)
Hey, thanks! Glad you like! :D
After doing more research on this. (Like checking out the autors, some of there works, HotS and what have you) I'm THAT much more interested. Definatly some talent there!
So please definatly contact me if your interested. Although I do not have experiance in comics I have taken many Storyboarding classes and have my BAA(Animation). :)
Let me know!
Hahhaha a third reply!
Almost forgot to mention. My style shown on these pages is completly flexable. If you need an example of something more dark and gritty I can do something. Upon request of course.

If you're happy to take on new-to-the-whole-webcomic-scene artists, I'd definitely be interested. I'm a professional designer/illustrator, and am currently turning a friend's short story into a traditional comic, and I've been vaguely looking for someone to collaberate on a webcomic with - I kept trying to persuade the writers at my old magazine that we needed one on our site! I have some illustration work up on my website here: http://www.curvedspaces.co.uk/illus1.phpBut that tends to be the more glossy, colourful stuff. If you're interested I could email you some of the graphite sketches I've done for my friend's piece.

and didn't hear. Did it suck that badly?
Still chomping at the art bit over here!

When'd you send an audition? Heck, I'd just about given up on ya!

(Oh, and this would be for an entirely different project that demands at least twice-a-week fidelity. But my sides are still on go...)

Beginning of the month, to theferrett, etc. etc. I can do twice a week, but if you're reserving me for side stuff that's cool too.
