A Nice Morning, Auto-Wise
I got up early to bring the car into the shop. It had a grinding noise coming from underneath; I thought transmission, which means hundreds to thousands of dollars of work. Gini thought it was a muffler; not quite a catastrophe, but still expensive.

I dropped it off at Drellishaks and fifteen minutes later, I was on my way. Which was nice. It would have been trivially easy to lie and say, "Hey, that's, uh, really bad" (given that I'd mentioned we'd looked underneath the car and hadn't seen anything), and charge us fifty bucks minimum, but no - "You'll catch us next time," they said with a smile.

That made going to the garage a positive pleasure, I may add. So I did what I should do: I hopped on Angie's List to leave a good review.

One of the things I believe firmly about is giving good feedback to businesses as well as bad, when I can. When I've gotten good technical support, I've been known to say, "Can I talk to your boss?" and then leave a message for their superior saying, "This woman made working with y'all a pleasure. You should totally give her a raise." If I go to a restaurant that's good, I try to throw them in a link in my blog to throw them some traffic. So leaving a good review in a local directory's the least I can do, and I hope it helps 'em.

That's the sweet bit. Generally, the only time you hear from the public is when they're beating you over the head with something you did wrong. Finding time to thank 'em for good service is what keeps these poor schmucks going. (And as it turns out - no surprise - they have tons of accolades. But more don't hurt.)

(As an extra-special bonus, I looked 'em up saw that the garage my friend [info]vrax runs, the one that has the coolest name in the world but is on the other side of town, had gotten even more awards than Drellishaks. Always nice to see the pride your pals have in something is warranted.)

(Tell me I'm full of it)

It is always nice to give positive feedback for a good experience, directly or indirectly. Good job!

It's always good to have a chance to thank and repay that sort of behaviour. I guess we even need to, to help it take off.

Lamentably, whenever I here stories like this, they inevitably seem to be followed up with one describing an incident like "And I wrote to the company to thank them for the employee's behaviour, and got a form letter back apologising for the inconvenience and including a few coupons."

I've had managers brace themselves for the worst, then look absolutely stunned when I started talking about what a great employee this person was. They hear it far too rarely.
