Book Review #86: Sex Parties 101
Contrary to popular belief, my wife and I have a reasonably mundane sex life. There’s no poly in our pool, and we’re not swingers. I’m just interested in the culture, is all.

But I do like reading about mundane details of bizarre lifestyles. I own a book on firebreathing. I have a book on how to become a porn star. And so when I saw a book on “How to hold a sex party,” well, you had me at hello.

I was curious about how one goes about holding a sex party… And more importantly, what are the little details that go into holding a good sex party? What sort of hors d’oeuvres does one serve? How do you find the right guests? How does one prepare the house for a big ol’ swingin’ fuckfest, and how do you get people started?

Imagine my surprise when I got it from Amazon and realized this was a book on gay sex parties.

But you know, like I said, I’m always interested in other cultures. So I read it anyway. I don’t know nearly enough about the mechanics of gay sex as I probably should, and gay orgies? Well, I know even less. So I read.

What I got was a surprisingly gay book. In fact, it’s aggressively gay. Every paragraph is studded with at least one reference to the joys of cocksucking, fisting, or otherwise male-on-male pleasure; this is a book that delights in the joys of gay sex, and goes out of its way to remind you why you’re here.

It struck me as being a little weird stylistically, but it works because the author’s so matter-of-fact about sex. He obviously enjoys it, and manages to maintain a similarly-aggressive positive tone about sex throughout the entire book. The message is Yes, sex can get complicated sometimes, but it’s still fun – come in and join us!

As for the book, well, I was a little disappointed, since the intersections of “gay” and “hetero” culture are fairly slim, and I learned nothing about the sorts of sex parties a man of my tendencies would hold. Some of the tidbits were universal, and interesting – for example, you want simple snacks because people are eating not for pleasure, but to replenish their bodies for a second go-round. Porn on the TV is fine, but it should be quiet, since the over-the-top performer noises often overshadow or suppress the real thing. And, of course, you have the eternal issue of people standing around, waiting for someone else to make the first move.

But gay culture is different. He seems to think nothing of finding three or four men at a bar and just having sex with them (and yes, this was written in 2005). Apparently, the problem with gay orgies is not finding one, but not stumbling across one, since apparently gay folks are just floppin’ it wherever. (Of course, that could be a side effect of the overwhelmingly sex-positive tome, but the book assumes that you’ll have no trouble finding participants.)

It was neat, however, to get an overview of a lot of the mechanics of gay sex, even if it struck me as slightly odd to have whole chapters devoted to anal sex and bondage in a (rather slim) sex party book. It was an interesting look into a life I don’t lead.

That said, the best part of this book was when I kept forgetting what I was reading, and left it in the bathroom as though it were any other book. Which I did during the entire weekend, meaning that anyone who used the toilet during the “I-Shoulda-Seen-That-By-Now Movie Marathon” no doubt was wondering what the hell I was up to.

Well, now you know.

Book Review #87: Delta Green: Eyes Only, by Dennis Detwiller and company
Delta Green is the best roleplaying supplement ever; it’s what X-Files should have been, the intersection between the hard-edged field of intelligence and the blurred reality-horror of H.P. Lovecraft. You have scientists trying to crack the unknowable, and men in crisp black suits trying to infiltrate cultist enclaves.

Delta Green was the core book, but there were three limited-edition chapbooks released that became instant eBay items. Each of these books fleshed out a specific area of the Delta Green universe, and they immediately went for $75 a pop online. Which is a lot for thirty-two pages.

Eyes Only collects these books into one volume, with some additional scenarios. It’s all quite good stuff, even though I’d read two-thirds of it before and the part about the Grays (a.k.a. “The Fungi From Yuggoth”) is the weakest stuff.

Still, if you’ve never read Delta Green, this isn’t the place to start; get the core rulebook. And if you have, you probably own this already.

(Tell me I'm full of it)

"Terrible" was wonderful. i was surprised at how dangerous everything was - and NOT so long ago at all! It's amazing how quickly we turned things around, and a little scary too - revolutions are called such because they can come around again.

The performances on WWZ are stellar. Each character's personality and that character's level of credibility comes through clearly. i am very happy that i bought this on CD instead of a book. i'm up to the female Air Force pilot now and the actress who has done her voice is superb. You HEAR the sheer kickassery of the woman.

I just finished "Delta Green: Eyes Only", even though I don't own the original game. :-) Thing is, I really don't like the old CoC system, but I love the idea of Delta Green. But it made sense anyway.

How can you not love percentile dice? It's my favorite game mechanic. (Granted, I haven't managed to finish a gaming book yet, but I still love that dice mechanic.)

I just hate having skills that are 38%, etc. I've PLAYED systems like that, sure, but they aren't my favorite. I think my favorite system is still Pendragon, which uses a 20sider for skill checks. (I read game books. I have a LOT of game books. I buy them for the fluff.)

I have hundreds of dice. My husband thinks my daughter and I are crazy, because we both love our dice and have a competition over who has how many. (Of course, I have the advantage of having been role-playing when I went into labor with her, so I have to win. :-)

You definitely have the win. I even concede the win to you as well. I have a bunch of dice, but my collection is paltry compared to some. It's tough to justify buying more when we are only using d6s now, but get me into a decent dealer's room at a con and I can't resist.

This was the problem with Shadowrun as well...which I'm pretty sure is not the Hero system (or if it is, I've been living a lie my whole life...or something).

I just loved anytime I got to pull out the d12. The 20 is nice and all, but the d12 has both style and gets points for being rarely used. If I was using it, it must've been for something important. Like big sword damage.

the book assumes that you’ll have no trouble finding participants

I live in a very socially-conservative southern town, right in the heart of the Bible Belt. There are heterosexual orgies going on ALL the time here, and I'd assume that is true pretty much everywhere. The thing is, if everyone knew, and anyone could attend, they'd have too many males. So, it's kept somewhat quiet (compared to the gay sex parties), and it's by invitation only.

I love your book reviews, by the way.

Well, I know that my friends go to orgies in Atlanta and Miami. I don't know if that answers your question.

A young single male is unlikely to be invited, though, unless there is something exceptional about him.

I think there's a part where we have to realize that it's not a normal party. I myself am all for good food and good conversation, but I don't think you get a lot of either at a sex party.

Hmm, maybe it's a cultural thing - this must be a goyische sex party because I can't imagine food being incidental to a Jewish one - then what's the party? It would just be lots of people having sex together and near to each other!

Honestly - it's an know your crowd, know what will happen thing. For more experienced folks, yeah, they might realize that anal sex and milk-based products, even if you're not fully intolerant, may not be a good combo. I'm personally not intolerant, but I can notice the difference afterwards, internally, between a meal with milk and one without. You also just don't really want to feel full in general.

Presumably most people attending a party like that will know their limitations.

The real difference though, is that for a party like that, consisting of all men, there is no real seduction going on. Men who go to a party like that don't need much convincing to find a corner or a room. It's one of those "stereotypical gender difference" things.

Given the general stance of both sexes towards sex it shouldn't come as a surprise, but survey says:
Gays have the most sex
Lesbians the least
Heterosexuals fall somewhere in between

Though I've never used the darkrooms myself, a friend of mine who's into the leather scene has introduced me to several bars that have them. The bars are well frequented, so I don't see why the darkrooms shouldn't be. If you want sex it's not that hard to find if you're a gay man. Whether or not it's you scene and/or kink is of course a different matter altogether

I was also somewhat surprised by the "MEN MEN MEN, WE'RE A SHIP ALL FILLED WITH MEN" theme of Sex Parties 101. I was hoping for a more general etiquette guide. Possibly with less assless chaps.

(Two asides: I kept typing "Sex Parities". And I know all chaps are by definition assless, but merely saying "chaps" isn't as striking.)

Yeah, it seemed to be a primer on gay sex in general. I mean, the segment on anal sex was intriguing for me, but if I was a gay man I'd know all about that by the time I started wanting to go to a sex party. I wanted better details on the parties themselves.

I guess as gay men my partner and I are pretty boring. We don't have "sex parties" or turn our apartment into a sex club, but then we only live 30 miles south of San Francisco, so it's not hard to find sex were we looking.

Maybe in other parts of the country one needs to hold a party.
